I haven’t heard anything. I’d lazily guess a 2019 launch.

Nothing substantial, apparently.
The few tidbits that have been disclosed to the public indicate that the story is not going to be related to the immediate background of the movies - that, in my opinion, would be pretty great, because then we'd be spared stuff like "Adventures of Young Aragorn", and perhaps be presented something more sophisticated. - As I wrote above, I am crossing my fingers for a Dunedain TV series. ...But I am not holding my breath.

I would speculate that they will center it on Aragorn’s adventures in his youth, when, under the name of Thorongil, he fought for Gondor against the Corsairs of Umbar. Kind of a thin story to base a whole TV series on, but, if they really are going for a “Game of Thrones” type show—intrigue between human nations and houses, sex, sloooow buildup of the war, ignoring vast distances—then, they’ll want a humanocentric story based on Gondor but drawing in Arnor, Rohan, Umbar, Harad, and the Easterlings. Confirmed (-ish). A little sad, but obviously not at all surprised.

Gaaah. I am disappoint. - That said, I read one of these days that Peter Jackson is courted to produce, and so things might really go hand in hand with the movies. tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Timeline_of_Aragorn...Though I really don't know what they would want to do with the character, at this point. His movie story was perfect, with the blanks in his biography serving as emphasizing elements, like with, say, Star Wars' Han S-... Ah, never mind.

pjmedia.com/lifestyle/amazon-to-use-rise-of-sauron-fall-of-middle-earth-atlantis-for-lotr-prequel-series/Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. The big reveal! AMAZING! I had quietly resigned myself to this series being "Aragorn fan-fiction that is basically 'Legend of the Seeker' without all the weird dildo weapons", plus "all the elements from MERP that we can steal without people noticing". - But now, with this being revealed as a variation on the tale of Numenor, I think this might still get somewhere truly interesting. Now, let's be clear, it being set in Numenor also likely means a "Games of Thrones"-i-fication of the universe: The story before the fall is all sort of courtly intrigue that ME can muster, and the story after the fall is only adaptable with a lot of filler. In terms of adaptational pitfalls, I am mostly worried about whether the story really focuses on Elendil and his sons, or on lesser, "witness-type" characters. One makes sense for a "Fall" storyline, the other makes sense for a "Last Alliance" storyline. In both cases, the question of Elendil's consort (Engrish?) is already giving me nightmares, as does a possible sexualization of Al-Pharazon's backstory. I think we're going to see season one as a soft reboot of "LotR" on screen, as slow-paced as possible, with Elendil first deciding to build a certain number of ships at the end of the season. After season 2 or 3, Middleearth, and the founding of the human kingdoms. No "Last Alliance" storyline before at least season 5, and hopefully they will respect the author's original timeline at least to the point where Isildur and Anarion aren't depicted as teenage heartthrobs when we get to the siege of Barad-Dur. Now, whatever it is, it's already a hell of a lot better than "The Adventures of young Strider". IMO. Aaaaah, we go and see Elves, and all!

Cool! I agree; I like this concept better than a Young Aragorn fanfic. I’m not holding my breath that they’ll do it justice, of course. But the Númenórean material from Sauron Defeated is some of Tolkien’s starkest, most novel-like writing. Unfinished Tales (The Mariner’s Wife) and The Peoples of Middle-earth (Tal-Elmar) could also be mined.

The Second Age is actually a good choice for the series, since it's relatively obscure for most people. Besides the stories of Numenor, the tale of Celebrimbor and the forging of the Rings of Power is available (I strongly suspect there will be such an episode).

I hope Queen Berúthiel and her cats make an appearance! 😊 Edit: no, wait, she's from the Third Age.

One detail has been pointed out to me since I posted this that I think might be pretty interesting, story-wise:
So, the TV series is set in the very same continuity as the movies, apparently. This means there is no line of kings of Gondor beyond Isildur. Which doesn't make sense, really, storywise; it might point towards the first *point of cringe*, though, in that we will likely see Gondor and Arnor founded already. That, in my mind, would take a lot of the dynamics of the story away, for me. I hope they change this in a way that is more in tune with the books. In general, I hope we see as little of Gondor as possible, at least in the beginning of the series.
