Ok. So I'm finally getting around to putting up a review of sorts of the new 2nd Edition or 'Basic' version of Hideouts & Hoodlums.
I'm prepping for another one shot game. This time it will be Timely characters. A post war All-Winner's Squad bunch against the communist Red Skull and assorted other bad guys.
I've got the print version of the book in my grubby little paws (and thanks Scottenkainen for making POD available for Luddites like myself who prefer dead tree versions of games). He did a good job of cleaning up the presentation and putting everything into one book. The three core classes of Fighter, Superhero and Magic User are here, along with the indispensable Mystety Man.It would be easy enough to add others like the Cowboy, Aviator, or Speedster from the original game if you require them. There are some added features like a cool and simple skill system. It's a Basic version as only the first 6 character levels are included, and the first three levels of spells and powers.
To reiterate a bit on what H&H is: This game is a re-imagining of OD&D if Gygax and Arneson had taken Golden Age comics as their base of inspiration instead of swords & sorcery literature and wargames. It plays much like OD&D, with similar mechanics and feel to the playing of it. Scott's original presentation was in three books and then a series of supplements that expanded the game (sound familiar?). This Basic game distills those down to one volume that's easier to understand and reference.
Scott has done a good job putting this together into a cohesive single volume. Hopefully the 'Advanced' version will follow soon!
I'm looking forward to running this again. More later......
