Here are the front and back covers of my newest AD&D module, CRYPT OF THE LILAC HIGH PRIEST:
Wait. Didn't the thread title say something about the Teeth of Dahlver-Nar?
Yes indeed. This module is for 1st-level characters, and if they do well in this module, they will end up as the proud possessors of one of the Teeth of Dahlver-Nar.
One? Didn't Dahlver-Nar have 32 teeth?
Yes again! But surely you don't expect all 32 of those little Teeth to stick together like magnets for thousands of years, just waiting for someone to easily scoop up the whole set.
Well, what comes next?
Whatever you want. This module is 100% self-contained. You can buy it and never give me another dime for any of my other books. Or, if you prefer, you can check-out my other offerings.
But when is the second stage of the Quest for Dahlver-Nar coming out?
2017.
What can I do in the meantime?
Canny characters will probably be 2nd level by the time they finish this module. Find a cool module for 2nd-level characters. Clark Peterson's Tomb of Abysthor (retitled The Lost Lands: Stoneheart Valley) is one possibility.
Let's talk about the cover. Why did you do it in the style of the 1970s TSR monochrome modules?
Not only do they look cool, I wanted to make it clear at a glance which of my modules go with which: The monochrome covers indicate Quest for the Teeth of Dahlver-Nar, the full-color covers indicate Carcosa, and the duo-tone background covers indicate the Wilderness campaign setting.
Is that a beholder on the cover? In a module for 1st-level characters? Really?
Well spotted. I sure hope it looks like a beholder, because I asked the cover artist (Luigi Castellani) to use the picture of the beholder in Gary's AD&D Monster Manual for guidance. My D&D group had zero fatalities with this beastie.
I notice in the book's preview that it mentions that the dungeon is set on the map on the back cover, and it refers to your WORM WARS OF THE DWARVEN ICE KINGS. Are you releasing incomplete books to try to induce people to buy the others? Why, you...
Not at all. Every single AD&D module I release is 100% self-contained. It's like Gary's G1: Steading of the Hill Giant Chief. You can use that in your campaign and then get on with your life. Or you can continue with G2: The Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl. To give another example: You can read a Conan story by REH and never read another one, or you can pick up others.
Is the module any good?
I obviously think it is. I never publish any of the stuff I make that goes over with my players like a lead balloon. To me, CRYPT OF THE LILAC HIGH PRIEST is a quintessential AD&D dungeon adventure. It's also a big plus in my book that it is part of a quest for the very cool Teeth of Dahlver-Nar, which quest sends the PCs tramping over hundreds of miles of terrain. I don't think a quest for an artifact/relic has ever been done on such a grand scale (16 modules) before.
So how much for the module?
It's $9.99, but that price is for the indiscriminate. Lulu has discounts almost every day, going as high as 35% off. Right now they are having their best sort of sale: FREE SHIPPING plus 10% off. The module can therefore be shipped free to your door for $8.99, which is what I paid for lunch yesterday with nothing to show for it.
As always, I welcome your questions and comments.
