Xathoqqua's ears! More like "City of the High-Level NPCs". Must be University of IX alumni. IX is coming up soon! I'm very excited. Time once again for daily encounters! This fine day your players have sailed to the Pictish capital of Fidib, City of the Tattooed Spider-Worshiping Diabolists. You know that was probably a mistake, right? 8 drunks 7 bandits (thugs) Snowstorm 3 giant wolf spiders – intelligent and evil Fog bank Patrol of 20 light infantry led by Motios (2nd level fighter). Verctissa, harlot (priced at 1 silver piece) Patrol of 14 light infantry led by Vellocatos (7th level fighter). Cassivellaunos (2nd level Neutral magician) accompanied by 1st level apprentices Tasciovanos and Ciar as well as 6 light infantrymen. 7 giant rats (spider food) 8 giant rats (more spider food) 1 woolly mammoth (domesticated) 1 giant chameleon Needs more spiders!

Verctissa is actually a were-spider! And that mammoth is totally spider food too; or maybe a spider "host". I'm picturing the spider birth scene in Stephen King's The Mist... only about 20 times worse. Speaking of Stephen King... I noticed that he was a Copper supporter for first edition. Surely he is not the Stephen King?

Surely he is not the Stephen King? I might have to raise Verctissa's rate to 2 s.p. then. Based on the books he publishes weekly, I don't see how Stephen King would have time for gaming. But you never know. Oh boy! It's daily encounter time. Today your players have journeyed to the grasslands of the Fields of Vol, where men are men and apes are also men. What will they encounter there? 20 Neutral pilgrims led by Trang (7th level druid) and his 3rd level assistant druid Sainoth. Also with the group are Zaumnos (6th level fighter) and Thoom (8th level fighter). These devout fools are seeking a shrine of Yoon’Deh in the very midst of the teeming savage Kimmeri-Kelts and equally savage ape-men of Kor. 16 wild horses 4 ape-men Fog bank Lost Hunting party of 15 Kimmeri-Kelt bowmen and 14 dogs, led by Grainne. They haven’t bagged any game yet. Patrol of 30 Kimmeri-Keltic light cavalry led by Herodotos. 21 red deer 1 black bear 180 red deer! 3 ape-men 1 boar 6 boars Plenty of game, more inept hunters.

It's time once more for daily encounters! In this episode, your players have traveled by airship to the Floating Island of Paradoxon, an Amazon-held chunk of debris floating next to Hyperborea. What horrors await them in the forests there?
16 vipers! 3 owl bears! Vermin (PC loses food and water) 14 aurochs and 500 bats (only at night) fleeing from 451 army ants that are eating everything in their path! Hailstorm 3 cockatrices! Patrol of 14 medium infantrywomen led by Alexandra (1st level fighter) Hunting party of 10 archers and 15 dogs, led by Artemisia. Though they don’t respect the hunting prowess of males, neither have they taken any game yet. Hunting party of 14 archers and 7 dogs, led by Eudoxia. Like their sisters, these huntresses have had no luck. Demetrios (3rd level Chaotic Evil berserker) hiding from the women Black lotus! Patrol of 11 medium infantrywomen led by Pelagia (10th level fighter! – this must be the A team). Probably looking for Demetrios. 1 brown bear
I guess it's a lot safer inside the City in the Clouds... unless you get on the bad side of the Amazons...

Welcome back to daily encounters! This time your players have traveled to Gal City, chief settlement of the Kelts. It has to be better than the last few places, right?
Patrol of 14 light infantrymen led by Riona (9th level fighter). 6 giant fire beetles (night only) Sandstorm – desert only, so no encounter! Conan (Chaotic Good 10th level warlock) with 5th level apprentices Laoise, Dughlas, and Echna, accompanied by 6 5th level mercenary heavy infantrymen! Chaotic Good NPC Party! Eros (4th level illusionist), Imbos (4th level fighter), and 10 light infantry hirelings. Patrol of 15 light infantrymen led by Tuathla (3rd level fighter). 25 rats Cloudburst 6 drunks 1 domestic aurochs Sandstorm – once again doesn’t apply, so no encounter 1 domesticated dromedary Lawful Good NPC Party! Zai of the Shadow Magic (8th level illusionist), Qarrullesta (8th level magician), Zennquann (8th level cleric), Zai the Blue (8th level magician), and 6 2rd level mercenary medium infantry.
So it seems Gal City is "Adventurer Central". Excellent!

Daily encounter time! Today your players have ventured out into the Gal Hills, where the Kelts have most of their settlements. That doesn't sound too bad either...
21 red deer 12 rats Patrol of 16 light infantrymen led by Fionuir (6th level fighter). 1 mountain lion Hunting party of 11 bowmen and 13 dogs, led by Aonghus. They haven’t bagged any game. 1 black bear 3 wolves Patrol of 13 light infantrymen led by Ana (4th level fighter). 2 giant wolf spiders 4 boars 1 mountain lion Ros (10th level druid!) with 1 viper companion 21 red deer
Not too bad at all (except for a couple of giant wolf spiders, but they weren't the smart kind). I think I know where to start neophyte adventurers...

It could make for a nice series of linked encounters too. The party, patrols, and hunting party are looking for a renegade Druid (fools!) and the predators have been sent by Ros to harry the would be pursuants.

The party, patrols, and hunting party are looking for a renegade Druid (fools!) and the predators have been sent by Ros to harry the would be pursuants. That must be it! It's that time again: daily encounters! In this edition, your players have traveled to the rolling grasslands of the Gibbering Fields. What horrors await them there? 2 hyaena-men Thunderstorm (accompanied by the hysterical cackling of hyaena-men, no doubt) Snowstorm 15 aurochs 24 hyaena-men! 170 red deer Fever 21 hyaena-men! 12 woolly mammoths Violet lotus! 4 hyaena-men 1 boar Fog bank I hope the PCs like game animals and hyaena-men (I'm guessing they like the former more than the latter).

Good morning Hyperborea! and welcome to daily encounters. This one is very special, as your players are daring one of the greatest mysteries of Hyperborea: one of the Great Obelisks that rises from the sea at the rim of the world. What will they encounter there?
5 blue whales Sleet Storm Iceberg! (hope it’s not winter…) 20 lizardmen – but only along the coast, so no encounter! 1 killer whale 7 giant rats – but only along the coast, so no encounter! 1 shoggoth! 4 trolls – coastal only, so no encounter 2 giant crabs 6 crocodiles Iceberg again! (I really hope it’s not winter) Fever 6 elder things! (perhaps looking for that shoggoth)
Does a wet shoggoth get bonuses to save vs. fire? I'm guessing so. Yikes!

Good idea! Maybe I'll add a separate encounter region for the Rim of the World... It's time for daily encounters! Today your players are aboard ship in the middle of the Hyperborean Sea. What will they meet there? 15 ghouls – lacedons! 4 giant crabs 2 giant crabs 1 giant crocodile 1 sea serpent Merchants on carrack – 8 merchants (1st level thieves), 14 heavy crossbowmen, 18 halberdiers, Hebbalvalith (2nd level fighter in command of guards), and 50 sailors equipped as marines. 40,000 g.p. worth of trade goods. 1 killer whale 6 giant ferrets – coastal only, so no encounter! 1 giant crocodile 1 giant crab 1 killer whale 4 killer whales 8 great white sharks Quite a random haul if the PCs are evil, and strong enough to sack that merchant ship.

Once again, it's daily encounter time! Today your players have journeyed to Ice Lake, where the Esquimaux worship Kraken instead of Kthulhu (big improvement). Who or what will they meet there?
Snow blind (one PC can’t see for 4 hours)! 19 bactrian camels 1 spectre! – night only Lost 6 giant white toads! Hunting party of 10 bowmen and 8 dogs, led by Aguta. They haven’t bagged any game yet. Fever Hunting party of 12 bowmen and 9 dogs, led by Tuwawi. They haven’t bagged any game yet either. Thin ice (over 10’ hole) Hunting party of 13 bowmen and 7 dogs, led by Salaksartok. They’ve managed to bag a black bear! Hunting party of 10 bowmen and 10 dogs, led by Suka. They’ve bagged 8 wolves! Lost Windstorm!
It looks like Kraken-worshiping Esquimaux are slightly better shots. Who knew?

It's time for your daily encounters! In this installment, your players have made landfall on the forested shores of the Islands of the Ape-Men. Whatever will they meet there? 24 ape-men! 12 giant rats Quicksand 21 giant bees! (one sting each is all they need) 1 ape-man 5 giant tuataras (night only) 3 rats 4 ape-men 14 giant bombardier beetles! Fever ( monkey fever, no doubt) 1 giant komodo dragon Fog bank 1 mountain ape (big brother!) It's pre-hysterical!

Welcome back to daily encounters! Today your players have made landfall on the dreaded Isle of Ghul, which nine out of ten dentists recommend avoiding under any circumstances. Just how badly will this go?
Lost (and so it begins…) Fog bank 14 skeletons Rockslide 6 ghouls 18 zombies 4 ghouls 3 ghouls Box canyon Sleet storm 14 zombies Fog bank 3 ghouls Ghul didn’t put in an appearance himself (probably still working on the hardback). Maybe next time…

Daily encounter time! In this episode, your players have arrived at the volcanic slopes of the Isles of Thur, where some oddball Vikings still worship Thor. They can't be as bad as the Ymir-worshipers, right?
6 mountain lions Hermundr (9th level shaman!) Vermin (PC lost food) 4 trolls! 8 wolves Snowstorm (wrath of Ymir on the heretics?) 30 bandits Sippy, prospector (and 9th level Chaotic Evil cleric of Xathoqqua). She doesn’t have a map to a mine, just a hunch. Flash flood! Vermin (another PC loses food) 1 brown bear Patrol of 16 medium infantrymen led by Sigrun (5th level fighter). They are alert for foul worshippers of Ymir and Ullr (and also trolls). 5 giant wolf spiders!
A nice varied assortment of encounters.

Welcome back to daily encounters! Today your players have made the highly dubious decision to land on IX, Isle of the Necromancers! I hope their wills are made out...
11 skeletons 4 skeletons Patrol of 20 light infantry led by Storane (12th level fighter!) and accompanied by Insazagos (9th level magician!) Yikes, it really doesn’t pay to visit IX… unless you want to be enslaved… Mada (10th level witch!) 3 zombies Rockslide 1 zombie 100 slaves building a necromancer’s fortress, guarded by 14 light infantry led by Tamura (5th level fighter). Will the PCs soon be joining the slave gang? 23 skeletons 5 skeletons 6 ghouls 13 zombies 18 skeletons
I really hope they brought a cleric!

Which reminds me, is it "IX" or "Ix"? Or is it just plain old "Nine"? It's always "IX" in the gazetteer. You'd have to ask Jeff why. Time for your daily encounter! This is another very special one, as your players have entered the city of Khromarium, erstwhile capital of the Hyperboreans, largest city in Hyperborea, center of the civilized world, and also a wretched hive of scum and - sorry, I thought about the prequels and threw up in my mouth a little. Anyhoo, what will your players meet in this grandest of Hyperborean cities? Patrol of 15 light infantry led by Rhulrhana (2nd level fighter). Looking for trouble or causing it? Patrol of 18 light infantry led by Zennquann (8th level fighter). Maybe Khromarium isn’t as lawless as rumors would have it… Patrol of 16 light infantry led by Rhul (12th level fighter!) …unless the city watch are also the criminals? Patrol of 16 medium infantry led by Zullesta (1st level fighter). Holy cow, there must be a great disturbance in the city to warrant this many patrols. I wonder what’s happening. 4 beggars 17 zombies (well, there’s your problem…) Aroon (7th level Neutral fighter) accompanied by 11 2nd level medium infantry mercenaries/zombie hunters Vermin (Luckless PC lost his food, probably to rats or jaundice-centipedes) 1 viper Poison gas! Sewer broke and released a stinking cloud! Patrol of 16 light infantry led by Qarrdunnia (5th level fighter). Probably still zombie hunting. Zullesta the Quick (6th level Chaotic Good thief). Will she propose some daring heist to the PCs while the city watch is distracted with the zombie outbreak? 10 giant black centipedes Khromarium really needs some full-time zombie hunters. And a plumber.

It's that time again: daily encounters! In today's episode, your players have traveled to the Kimmerian Steppes. Big game ahoy?
15 wild horses 13 aurochs 24 dromedary camels 24 more dromedary camels Heat wave! 11 aurochs 13 aurochs 40 musk oxen Patrol of 30 light cavalry led by Lysandra. Possibly hunting? 20 wild horses 14 bactrian camels 20 wild horses Fever
Lots of game on the Kimmerian Steppe – all those luckless hunters in other regions should come here.

What time is it? Daily encounter time! In this installment, your players are visiting the forested shores of the Kitasion Archipelago which, like the Aeries, are swarming with mythical beasts. Unlike the Aeries, some people are actually foolish enough to live here.
Insect swarm 3 wyverns Lost 2 harpies 1 night-gaunt 100 bats (night only) 1 cyclops! 5 wild dogs Lost Trin, hermit (neither a classed NPC nor insane) Rockslide Hunting party of 14 bowmen and 12 dogs, led by Raidalla. They haven’t bagged any game yet. 1000 bats! (night only)
Not too bad for mythical beasts this time (well, except for the cyclops), but those bats are going to leave a mark if it's nighttime...

It's that time again: daily encounter! Today your players have sneaked into Kor, City of the Ape-Men! They should have sneaked into Candy Apple City (they have apes too, but they're not so big).
3 ape-men 6 ape-men 90 human slaves guarded by 10 ape-men armed as light infantry and led by Tinuscra (7th level ape-man fighter). 29 rats 4 ape-men 5 ape-men 5 ape-men Fever Plague! (ebola?) 4 ape-men 25 ape-men 4 ape-men 1 riding horse (Planet of the Apes style!)
I guess flinging your own waste around is really not healthy...

Welcome back to daily encounters! This time your players are visiting yet another unfriendly city: the subterranean metropolis of Krimmea. The good news is: there won't be any celestial phenomena...
Vermin (PC lost water!) Patrol of 16 light infantry led by Herodotos (11th level fighter!) Looking for anybody with a suntan. 6 giant pink centipedes Ptolemais (Neutral 10th level thief!) She’s always wanted to see the surface world… Patrol of 13 light infantry led by Drakon. Still looking for heretical outsiders (what are they hiding down here?) 6 drunks (mushroom-wine hangovers are the worst) Lysandra (4th level fighter) accompanied by 10 light infantry henchpersons Plague! (Hyperborean cities are just not healthy) Patrol of 8 light infantry led by Korinna (3rd level fighter). Still searching for intruders (and now plague victims) 1 ghul! (desert only, so thankfully no encounter) 1 domesticated aurochs 1 riding horse Patrol of 12 light infantry led by Theron (9th level fighter). Still looking for outsiders and/or plague carriers.
Probably a good place to stay away from.

Time for your daily encounter! Today your players have traveled to the shores of Lake Nova, where three mutually hostile groups send hunting parties. There's no way this ends well...
2 wolverines 22 reindeer Lost 1 aqua-hydra! Hunting party of 10 bowmen and 10 dogs from Brigand’s Bay, led by Rellrennia. They haven’t taken any game. 16 aurochs 18 aurochs 3 giant skeletons! 2 polar bears 80 musk oxen 5 wolves Lost 4 giant white toads!
Well, the hunters weren't much of a problem, but some of those monsters might be. Ouch!

Daily encounter time! In this installment, your players have traveled to Larchmere Yys - last stronghold of Apollo-worshipers in Hyperborea. Sounds like a pretty safe place, right?
1 viper Rhulrhana (2nd level Chaotic Evil barbarian) Falling star 9 drunks Sandstorm – not in a desert, so no encounter! Fever 11 giant rats 1 domesticated aurochs 1 draught horse 1 riding horse Fever 1 draught horse 12 giant rats An appropriately dull place. And no patrols encountered!

It's time once again for daily encounters! This time your players have journeyed to the Leng Plateau - a site almost as dire as the dreaded Plain of Leng itself. I feel these PCs are not making good life choices...
8 wild dogs 20 leaper camels 9 dire wolves 8 woolly rhinoceroses 4 ape-men 20 leaper camels Esquimaux hunting party of 10 bowmen and 15 dogs, led by Suka. They have bagged 5 wild boars! 7 woolly rhinoceroses 8 dire wolves 50 musk oxen 9 woolly rhinoceroses 17 aurochs 1 polar bear The PCs didn’t meet any of the men from Leng (at least, not on this trip) but the woolly rhinos are certainly thick on the ground.

Daily encounter time! Today your players have ventured into the Lug Wasteland, which surrounds the city of Khromarium. Perhaps this will answer at least one burning question: is it safer inside or outside of Khromarium?
4 falcons Onchu (1st level Chaotic Evil barbarian) Fog bank 6 wyverns! 10 giant fire beetles (night only) 21 red deer Hunting party of 10 tenderfoot city-folk bowmen and 10 dogs, led by Zennquann. They haven’t bagged any game yet. 23 vipers! Hunting party of 13 tenderfoot city-folk bowmen and 12 dogs, led by Xillquillia and accompanied by Garr (7th level cleric). The power of prayer is again proven, as they have bagged 37 swamp rats for dinner! 5 giant fire beetles (night only) 9 giant frogs! 9 giant fire beetles (night only) 7 giant fire beetles (night only) I think it was safer inside; 23 vipers will probably leave a mark. Also, it must be mating season for the giant fire beetles…

As the Man from Another Place would put it: thet gum yooo lak iz goyng tooo kum bak instal. All so, welkum bak tooo daylee enncannters. In this episode, your players have made landfall on the island of Minotaurios and climbed a volcano, two decisions which I really hope will lead to them reexamining their lives (if they still have them). Come on dice, Daddy needs a lava eruption!
8 wolves 1 minotaur Geyser! 1 giant weasel – only at night 1 giant weasel (night only) 1 minotaur 1 giant weasel again – but only at night 3 falcons 2 giant bees 1 giant chameleon Avalanche! 1 minotaur Lost
So it seems “Giantweaselos” would be an equally fitting name – at least on this visit. Oh well. Ahl see yooo agin inn twenny-fi yeers. Well, more likely tomorrow.
