I thought I'd let you all know that the BLUEHOLME™ Journeymanne Rules art-funding Kickstarter is going to launch pretty soon, and what a journey it's been! I am in the process of getting detailed quotations from the artists who've agreed to be part of it, after which I can finalise the funding and stretch goal levels and finally go live. I just realised how many artists I've got on board (funding permitting), but I think they will all work well together in one book given their styles. One advantages of having this number of people is that the art will be done much faster once the campaign is over - if I dumped all this on poor Jean-Francois Beaulieu he would no doubt run a mile. In the meantime, here's a teaser in the form of the KS video:

I've just sent the last email to my proposed artists, now I wait for their finalised quotations. There seems to be a ton of artwork in this book, so I'll have to set the funding levels in tiers - important artwork first to get it funded, then layers of nice-to-have art as stretch goals. Important means Jean-Francois Beaulieu and Russ Nicholson, later tiers will be a mix of everyone else. There will not be any extra stuff, the manuscript is written and laid out so all backers will have to wait for is the finished artwork to start rolling in. There are a lot of artists, so it shouldn't take too long for each to do their bit. Well I might throw in an introductory adventure/ campaign-building booklet as a final extra if the funding goes through the roof. Think Shrine of Kollchap Sobek.

Give us a day and month, so we may put some money aside before the wife and grandmonkeys run off with it.

Hey, you have more - launch early April, finish early May! Artists start work once the funds are in, the slowest of the bunch should be done in another two months, so I'm looking at a PDF publication date of early July. Of course I hope as many people as possible back the KS, first because I want those artists and all of their art (lower funding levels mean more white space or public domain art), and secondly because it will be a better deal for supporters. Plus they get their names in the book. I won't make the book PoD until the PDF has been out for at least 6 months to catch any errata before anyone kills any trees. Vile cries when a tree dies in vain because of unfound errata.

Still waiting for a couple of quotations to come in from artists, then I need to do the maths, and push the "go" button - probably in early April. You can have a look at the preview here:

I have this thread bookmarked...is this where you will make the announcement?

I will be announcing it all over the universe, don't worry! Some of those artists are expensive, I need all the backers I can get. On that note, I hope I can count on you all to spread the news wherever you can. This kind of Kickstarter lives or dies by word of mouth, and a fan recommendation is worth a dozen publisher press releases.

I'm not completely fixed on the pledge levels yet, they may still come down slightly. I want to offer backers a slightly better deal than later buyers, though I can't make it too low or it runs the risk of not funding. Note that the dead tree rewards will be at cost, as I can't afford to be losing money on them, so there is stillprinting cost and postage to consider (though I never pay postage for Lulu anymore - I just wait for a free shipping coupon and then go crazy). Unfortunately the Known World map won't be making an appearance as Alyssa Faden is otherwise occupied. I might approach someone else, or ask her again later, but it won't be in this Kickstarter.

Do you see the currency in HK$? Supposed to show in your local currency, KS said.

it shows both. "Pledge HK$115 or more. (Approximately US$15)"
And congrats on hitting the first funding level so quickly!

Well, the idea was that even if I didn't get all the backing I needed. at least I could get the most important art pieces and worry about the rest later. Now we're over half-way through the stretch goals, though, so I hope I don't end up having to create a huge pile of new rewards ...

We're well on the way to hitting the 2/3 mark, and it's only Day 2. Not wanting to jinx things or anything, but I'm hoping we make it all the way so that everything is funded, including the illustrated character sheets. Zenopus just reminded me of his contribution, the green grabber/sleepflower. Unfortunately that won't get a picture, because a) it doesn't have white space next to it, and b) it would be hard. But another one which made it in is something Holmes wrote up once: Art by Bradley K. McDevitt - I pre-paid for this one because I feel I should put my money where my mouth is.

Now we're over half-way through the stretch goals, though, so I hope I don't end up having to create a huge pile of new rewards ... DON"T do that to yourself. Stretch goal product rewards are kinda stupid to begin with, because, with OSR products anyway, nobody, and I mean nobody, is deciding to pledge because they can also get some cool dice bag or other bit of fluff. Also, offering more and more product rewards means a lot more work on your part that takes time and energy that is best spent on your main product. If people like your product - and they do! - they will continue to pledge for it as long as the Kickstarter is still live, regardless of silly add on "rewards". BTW didn't realize you were in HK. Have you given any thought to seeking out some of the local artists for some pieces?

I'm pretty jazzed after skimming the monster list in the backer preview. It's fun to have a clone game with so many Lovecraftian baddies, alternating with the weird humanoids and the simply whimsical monsters. It's a really nice mix, and it makes me wish there were even more white spaces destined for art.

Have you given any thought to seeking out some of the local artists for some pieces? I doubt I will. If it does go over (and I'm not that certain it will), I'll just end up plowing the money back into some more products, anyway. I'd rather do them at my glacial-but-perfectionist pace than rush them out because of KS time pressure. People who pledge are getting a good deal, anyway, because the prices really are very low in the KS. No, I haven't contacted local artists - basically I am recruiting on the web, and haven't come across anyone here. It's fun to have a clone game with so many Lovecraftian baddies, alternating with the weird humanoids and the simply whimsical monsters. It was a lot of fun tracking down monster references in Holmes's writings and adding them to the book.

We're well on the way to Stretch Goal #4, which is the spot art - if we manage to hit that, all the interior art is covered. There is only one more stretch goal after that, a set of 6 illustrated character sheets to cover all the traditional classes (generic, cleric, fighter, magic-user, fighting mage, and thief). James V. West does some cool illustrated character sheets.

I really doubt I will add any stretch goals that involve further writing or layout on my part, because that would definitely slow things down. I might decide to throw in some full-page illustrations if it comes to that. On the whole, though, I think I'll just invest any extra in the kind of books that might be difficult to crowd fund, like adventures.

"Maester" pledge levels for the hardback are almost gone - these are ultra-cheap and won't be repeated. Still some "Journeymanne" levels left for the softcover. Once these are gone there are other options, but they will be at higher pledge levels to stop me from going too far into the red.
