Just curious!
Something that's not too rules-heavy, is enjoyable, and any era. Could be fantasy, could be WW2, doesn't matter.

FUBAR is a good choice. You can use it for modern-day or scifi games. If your friend likes space combat, try Full Thrust Light.

Are you looking at miniatures or hex &chit or a mix?
Any of the Richard Borg designs are good for board style games. Things likr the Command and Colors line from GMT, Battle Cry from Avalon Hill/Hasbro, or The Great War from Plastic Soldier Company. These are a good baseline to start with.
If you want to go miniature route, GW Warhammer and 40K are simple enough. Buying it second hand is a way to not have sticker shock. Osprey is putting out a line of miniature rules covering large amount, both historical and fantasy.
This is a quick primer, hit me up if you would like more specifics.

Assuming you are talking hex & chit wargames I would suggest a little 40 counter game such as from Victory Point games or Decision games Example: www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/109827/paul-koenigs-market-garden-arnhem-bridgeI have a handful of these types of games used that I could part with for $5 if you want to try one to help you out. They are fun intense little games. If you are talking about minis based wargames I'm sure others would have more suggestions
