Ok, so I've only got issues 1-5, though I have read them cover-to-cover. The most interesting things I'd like to discuss so far are: 2) The various spell point / more flexible magic systems, and the way they continue even after people have established that Gygax only allows each spell to be used once per day. I wonder if anyone has tried anything like this in their game, and whether it makes it more fun (and prevents the five minute adventuring day), or whether it makes MUs overpowered. I’ve never tried the spell point system. I think it would tend to make MUs overpowered. In my game they do 1d6 dmg per hit. They can use many magic items others can’t. They can also incorporate scrolls into their arsenal. The trick is to locate a Wizard who will pen spell scrolls for a good price. Heh.

3) The light which is shed on the use or non-use of Chainmail. I get the impression people used Chainmail mainly for missile combat resolution and "background", but not much else. What issue and page do you refer? This isn’t related directly to A&E but it might shed more light on the matter: I recall an interview with Rob Kuntz in which he discusses how the chainmail rules were never relied upon during EGG’s play testing unless there was a mass combat situation. Here is a list of A&E contributors and the early issues in which they appeared. The list is reported to have been compiled by Lee, herself. I just purchased my first run of 10 issues, #10-19, in case one of them reprinted any portion of the fabled Steve "Perrin Conventions" for bay area play circa 1976. Alas, they are not to be had. Still, I don't regret the purchase. The format of the zines reads pretty much like these discussion threads. You guys are every bit as creative and scrutinizing as the original d&d fans. * * * * * Moderator's Note:
Followup posts regarding "The Perrin Conventions" have been moved to a new dedicated thread in the Men & Magic forum. Please continue further discussion of the Conventions there.

I am happy to report that Lee Gold is still accepting requests for purchase of Alarums & Excursions and she sent me a couple bonus essays, to boot. Fun stuff and a great contributor to our hobby
