So, I stumbled across this simple set of rules for Tanks. It's called Panzer Kid's Basic. You can find it at the Wargame Vault. The rules are PWYW and use d6's. It'll take you 2 minutes to read them.
This is a fun little game for anyone with kid's or if you just want a beer's and pretzel's tank battle. You'll have to gather a few things before jumping in, but you might already have a few matchbox sized tanks laying around. If you do, that'll save a little time. If you don't, then go over to Junior General and klick on their paper soldiers tab. Select top-down and proceed to WWII. I think I already included that path with the link.
Look for the name "Thomas Bloxham" and save two files by him. These are for North Africa- 15th Panzer Division (this will include Pz. II, III, IV's) and British 7th Armored Division (this will include M3 Grants and M3 Stuarts. Use the Grants as Crusader II's). These are PNG files. I opened them up in Microsoft Paint where I could cut, paste, and resize them. Ideally, you want counters 3/4" to 1" wide by 1 1/2" to 2" long. Then print and paste them on some thin cardboard like a cereal box and cut them out.
Throw down a tan sheet or blanket on the living room floor to create a playing area about 3 ft. by 5 ft. Then gather four to six pieces of terrain (rocks, plastic terrarium plants, etc.). Have each side take turns placing some obstacles on their side of the field. Now you're ready for a tank battle on the sands of Tobruk. You can use bits of stretched out cotton balls for smoke when a tank is knocked out.
I put together a quick scenario where the Germans had to capture a fuel depot from the British with 50% of their force by turn 6. The Germans had (2) Panzer IV's, (2) Panzer III's, and (4) Panzer II's (I gave these a speed of 10", range 24", attack +3, defense 7). The British got (12) M3 Stuarts.
Thought I'd share this in case anyone wanted to give it a go with their family. The guy's played the invading German's and the girl's played the valiant British in our game. It was fun
