In the 80s, the "inspirational reading lists" in Moldvay Basic and, later, the AD&D DMG were gold mines for me, and reading all those books doubtlessly influenced my life in ways I can't really fathom. Although some of the entries weren't accessible to me as a kid in a redneck South Florida town, I tracked down an awful lot of books because of those lists -- Jack Vance, Fritz Leiber, Mervyn Peake, literally dozens of authors I'd probably have never heard of without D&D. (I already liked Tolkien and Burroughs, and I'm sure I'd have come to H.P. Lovecraft anyway because I was really into horror.)
Finarvyn, I'd love to see a sub-forum dedicated to discussing the "sword & sorcery" and "weird fantasy" fiction that's foundational to our hobby. I know there are other places to discuss this sort of thing on the Web, but I suspect most OD&Ders are widely read in these genres and a lot of insights into our games could be, um, therefrom derived. ;D

It would be interesting to see how many others were interested. In the meantime, I suppose you could start threads in the "General" section. (Or maybe "Philosophy"? Hmmm.)
I hate to get too far afield in literature. Judging from the few "books that inspired you" types of threads, we seem to have a real variety of books which served as inspiration. It's a lot harder to define "old school literature" than OS gaming...

I'm probably more enthusiastic about this than usual because I'm starting to assemble my home library of inspirational reading, everything from Flannery O'Connor (my favorite "real" author) to The Worm Ouroboros, and the Moldvay and Gygax lists are excellent starting points.

Oh, I understand your enthusiasm. I'm just not sure if we're looking at a few threads or an entire section. If we get enough threads going, then I'm sure a forum area will follow.

Yeah, I finally decided to do it.
Sticky and EXALT for the idea.
