Marcel followed after the others, glad that his armor was slowing him down. His heart truly was not in this endeavor.
Joaquim retreated up the stairs, did a quick search for valuables in the main room and then went outside. He'd head in the general direction the tunnel was leading, to see if he could spot their quarry emerging from another building.

Day 18, the rest of turn 8 for Caltaran, Semeragin, Ramon, Joaquim, Marcel, (Axen, Koldo, Daphne, Laetitia, Gautier):
Ramon found that maces were too heavy and weighted poorly for throwing. He managed to throw his 10' and then it just hit the floor, about 10' shy of the nearest fleeing bad guy.
Of the archers, only Gautier had his bow out and was standing at a good angle for shooting at the fleeing thieves without risk of hitting his charging comrades. It was a glancing hit, but the arrow bounced off leather armor.
Caltaran and Semeragin led the charge to tackle the fleeing thieves, but their heavy armor slowed them down, just as it did for Marcel, and they were not able to outpace the lightly armored thieves. All five of the thieves made it through the wall. When Caltaran reached the wall next, he found that he could pass through it too, as if it wasn't there.
Meanwhile, Joaquim was now back upstairs, searching the near-empty ground floor common room. He found nothing unusual there, but there was still a tap room and another storage room to search.
Ramon said, "Caltaran, don't you have one of your hold blessings?"
He stooped to pick up his mace and began plodding after the others as quick as he could, dragging his shield and his mace along the walls in case another illusory wall concealed an unexpected branching.

Day 18, turn 9, rd. 1 for Caltaran, Semeragin, Ramon, Joaquim, Marcel, (Axen, Koldo, Daphne, Laetitia, Gautier):
Caltaran, Ramon, Daphne, and Gautier all pursued through the seemingly illusory wall. The others all hesitated and remained in the large cellar.
The four pursuers emerged in a dark corridor 10' wide and 10' high, that went straight ahead further than they could see.
Caltaran called on the gods to halt the thieves, but they were stingy and only froze three of them in their tracks. That left two still running.
"Stop, or we'll shoot you down!" Daphne called out. She unslung her bow, and Gautier did likewise, but the thieves were retreating quickly into the dark ahead of them. They only got off one shot each. Luckily, it was enough. One of the thieves fell after being shot in the back by Daphne. Gautier seriously injured his thief with a leg shot. The seriously injured thief put up his hands and stayed put to surrender.
The thieves had run up to 60' down this secret corridor. When Caltaran and Ramon reached the prisoners, they saw the corridor kept going past that.
Meanwhile, Invisible Joaquim was outside now, checking out the neighborhood. The neighborhood was an even split of middle class housing and mundane shops, none of which stood out immediately as suspicious. Joaquim started walking around and watching through windows...

Day 18, the rest of turn 9 for Caltaran, Semeragin, Ramon, Joaquim, Marcel, (Axen, Koldo, Daphne, Laetitia, Gautier):
Ramon found that not one of them was dead; Daphne's shot had only shocked the man into unconsciousness.
"No mercy for their kind," Axen said grimly.
But the matter was more complicated than that, as Marcel suspected. It was true that they had three curates of the most powerful church in the city either with them or supporting the mission, so they were not lacking in authority. However, no one had actually told them to come here and clear this place out. It could be construed as murder, though the social rank of these thieves was almost surely low, so the punishment could not be too great for killing them.

Caltaran says " axen there are rules in this city plus the city decides what punishment they get not us. Besides I suggest we interrogate one and see who is the supplier of these drugs and find the true villain behind these drugs. "
"Good, Caltaran. I am glad you have decided to take charge of this matter. I suggest consulting with the Viscount's men and bringing them in as well," Ramon said. "Let's confiscate these men's belongings and hand them over to the authorities, right Caltaran?"

Day 18, the rest of turn 9 for Caltaran, Semeragin, Ramon, Joaquim, Marcel, (Axen, Koldo, Daphne, Laetitia, Gautier):
The following loot was culled from the five prisoners: 3 suits of leather armor (one dwarf-sized) 1 scimitar (extra-nice-looking) 1 morningstar 2 short swords 6 daggers 2 rings 1 brooch 78 ep (mostly in 1 bag) 10 sp
Only one of the prisoners -- the one seriously injured by an arrow through his leg -- could currently speak.
"You'll never make us talk," the man said through the pain. "You don't know what you've gotten into."
Caltaran, Semeragin, Ramon, Marcel, Daphne, and Gautier dragged their prisoners back through the wall that wasn't.
Meanwhile, Joaquim spied on a baker being intimate with his wife through his shop window, but had seen no sign of the thieves outdoors.

A disappointed Joaquim returned to the group, not surprised to find that the buffoons he'd warned had gotten themselves captured regardless. When he saw the pile of treasure, he offered to cast a Detect Magic spell to ascertain if there was anything of extraordinary value.

Caltaran suggests " let's go ahead and get the watch patrol over here. Until the patrol get here let's tear this place apart and get evidence or clues. Since we have a talking prisoner let's take him up on his defiant challenge of not speaking. Joaquim after your detect magic has been cast by chance do you have a charm spell? If you don't have that spell then we question the prisoner the old fashion way. "
Caltaran moves over to the defiant prisoner and says "you really want to answer our questions truthfully because if you lie to us, me and my associate Ramon will know as our clerical blessings will grant us the ability to tell truth from lies."

Day 18, the rest of turn 9 for Caltaran, Semeragin, Ramon, Joaquim, Marcel, (Axen, Koldo, Fortunato, Daphne, Laetitia, Gautier, Ibai):
((I should have added that you also found 5 pouches of opium powder on them.))
Koldo offered to run back up to the surface and find a patrol. First he found Fortunato and Ibai, told them what had happened below, and that they weren't needed at the back door anymore.
Invisible Joaquim had passed Koldo on the way down. Joaquim made his presence known and cast the spell. Although these five thieves had been pretty well-off, none of them had been equipped with magic.
The rest of them searched the large cellar and found two locked boxes concealed about the room. Fortunato was about to try and pick the locks when Daphne found a hidden key stuck under a table. One of the chests held about 5 lbs. of opium powder and the other held about 5 lbs. of poppy seeds.
"There's our evidence," Axen said. "But what about Florence? Have we got the ringleader?" Axen poked their conscious prisoner with his sword. "Are you Florence?"
"No!" the man said. "Florence is deeper in our hideout. You'd be wasting your time casting your spells on an underling like me; it's Florence who'd know everything you want."

Day 18, turn 10 for Caltaran, Semeragin, Ramon, Joaquim, Marcel, (Axen, Koldo, Fortunato, Daphne, Laetitia, Gautier, Ibai):
Koldo was back with a watch patrol in 15 minutes. The officer of the patrol recognized Daphne and Fortunato, knew Caltaran and Ramon from services, and seemed to know of Marcel too. "You must be that Greyhawk guy starting up a new fighter's guild," he said, half-correctly.
The patrol accepted the opium as evidence and was glad to take the four thieves in custody. "The law against selling and possessing opium is an old one, but it's still on the books and we'll enforce it," the officer promised.
Meanwhile, while everyone else was feeling pretty mellow from the opium smoke in the cellar, an unusually edgy Caltaran was ready to push his injured prisoner back through the "illusory" wall and into the long hallway.

Day 18, turn 10a for Caltaran, Semeragin, Ramon, Joaquim, Marcel, (Axen, Koldo, Fortunato, Daphne, Laetitia, Gautier, Ibai):
After about 20 minutes of being exposed to the opium fumes, Caltaran and Semeragin decided they had enough of that and covered their noses. They went back through the wall that wasn't there. Axen, Fortunato, Daphne, and Laetitia followed. The others waited to see what Ramon and Marcel did.
Caltaran, Semeragin, Axen, Fortunato, Daphne, and Laetitia found by lantern light that the hallway ran 110' straight north, then opened onto the south end of a diamond-shaped room...

Caltaran whispers and suggests to Fortunato " hey can you using your stealth and scouting talents and scout ahead and see what you can see and hear if anybody is in the room ahead. For us to charge ahead could lead us open for an ambush and or backstab counter attack from the enemy. "
Semer waits and hopes caltaran plan will buy enough time for Ramon and Marcel to enter.

Day 18, turn 11 for Caltaran, Semeragin, Ramon, Axen, Fortunato, Daphne, and Laetitia:
"Better to lead me into an ambush, eh?" Fortunato whispered back to Caltaran, but he said it with a wink and slunk off down the long hall. He had disappeared into the shadows before even entering the room.
A minute later, Fortunato sneaked back to them, 70' back down the hall from the room. "There are four more thieves in the diamond-shaped room," he whispered to the people in the lead, "thinking they're ready for us. They're using an overturned table and some wooden statues for cover, and have crossbows trained on the doorway."
"If only we had some way to prevent them shooting us, then our numbers could overwhelm them," Ramon mused out loud. Then he smiled. "What if we take a table or some benches and carried it in front of us as a shield against their crossbows? That would get us in close enough to bring them down."
He began heading for the common room where he figured he would find something that would fit down the passage. If it had to be broken for the purpose he would do so.

Day 18, turn 11, rds. 1-2 for Caltaran, Semeragin, Ramon, Axen, Fortunato, Daphne, and Laetitia:
Ramon, Semeragin, and Axen returned to the lower common room and found Marcel still talking with the guard patrol. They filled the others in on what was happening, or about to happen, behind the wall.
Ramon and Semeragin found a table that was just the right size and weight for them to carry between them. They carried it back through the wall (with Axen following), then north down the long corridor, before rushing into the diamond-shaped room, holding their giant shield in front of them!
It was only a 20' charge into melee from there, though the crossbows still went off first. It looked like Caltaran was being targeted in particular for some reason, though the table-shield protected him. Semeragin took a hit, though, and a crossbow bolt became lodged in Laetitia's chainmail armor. Semeragin was only lightly injured.
Once they were in melee, the party dropped the table and laid into the thieves with weapons. Semeragin's tried to reach over a statue with his spear, but hit the statue instead. Ramon found their opponents were now quick to abandon their cover and the same thief fell back as Ramon tried to come around and flank him. Caltaran had trouble maneuvering around the table and arrived late to the melee.
That was all on one target. Axen, Daphne, and Fortunato engaged another. Of them, only Fortunato landed a serious stab wound.
The seriously injured thief said "No! Spare me!" and dropped to his knees. The thief surrounded by Semeragin, Caltaran, and Ramon seemed to think better of his chances and drew a broadsword to defend himself with. The two thieves furthest back started running for an exit in the north wall.
The thief who drew his sword never got a chance to use it -- Semeragin answered his own wound by impaling the thief, who fell dead to the floor.
And that was when one of the wooden statues started to move, and stepped up to fight...
