Sadly I once had the box version of the Lord of the Rings (minus the tactical games Sauron and Gondor) when I was young, long since lost. Like the PRESTAGS games its an expensive collector's item but you can find the rules online and there are virtual tabletop versions like Vassal and Cyberboard for play.

Saw a copy of this go for big bucks at a game auction I was at last Summer. It's pretty impressive in person and looked like a fun game.

I greatly prefer this version over the ffg/nexus edition, but sadly don't own it myself.

I have a copy of this. I have not played it (one of my buddies bitd had it and we took a stab at playing, but it did not get off the ground) but I love to set up the map. Someday perhaps I will play it.

Game is iffy, board is spectacular. Sauron was a crappy game, but Minas Tirith was fun

I did the same when I had it, set it all up and fiddled around with it but never really played it. You can find the rules, there are links to them on the boardgamegeek website, they aren't original scans though. Someone had gone and typed up the rules comparing copies of the two different printings. If someone speaks German, scans of the original are in the files section on BGG. The Vassal modules of WotR were taken down from the Vassal Engine website, this was one of those games that Decision games gained the rights to. I guess it was because the designer Richard Berg works for them. I did notice a problem with it, there are no breakdowns of the Riders of Rohan forces. You can still find the Cyberboard module to play the game in the files section on BGG

I’m a huge fan of the FFG game (I have the prized Collector’s Edition), but I would love a copy of the SPI game. I would love to play it, but just owning the board for its own sake would make me very happy. Finarvyn has talked about using it for RPGs, over the years. It is gorgeous.

I have a couple of copies and years ago I decided to take the map in to have it laminated so that it stays flat and protected. It's huge and colorful and I love having everything marked out in hexes. To this day, still one of my favorite wargame mapboards.

I got a copy from a fire station's garage sale many years ago. I tried playing a solo game to understand the mechanics, but being all of twelve or so I quickly got lost in the process.
I really ought to take it down and try again, now that I have friends who are willing to bust an afternoon huddled over a hex-and-counter gameboard.

Toying around with this again, such a beautiful map, what fun to design a new game using the map. Richard Berg the designer had also been working on "The Conquerors" a two part game about Alexander the Great and later the Roman conquest of the Hellenistic Kingdoms Successors to Alexander at the same time. The next year SPI published Sword & Sorcery using several of the systems from WotR and adding to them. Richard Berg's design of the Crusades was published that year also.

The map looks like it would be great for an OD&D hex-crawl campaign across Middle Earth.

Game is iffy, board is spectacular. Sauron was a crappy game, but Minas Tirith was fun I liked "THE BEAST OF MORDOR", the magic elf spear, and the magic spells.

Great game. I like the character game, but I love the full army game. The army game benefits from using off map force pool cards for the various factions. Gondor was great too, but lacking errata so a few loopholes needed to be filled. Anyway, lots of chrome and very cinematic.

Just thinking, I do wonder if the armies could be dealt with different. Thinking how Berg handled units in Conquerors, I think a unit with step reductions might be more realistic than being able to make "change" of a unit. So the East Mark Rohirrim can't be broken up into smaller denominations but it could suffer combat losses and be reduced. Replacement points from the East Mark could be used to rebuild the unit but can't be used with units not of the East Mark.

Been having fun working on some counters for a Dark Ages cyberboard gamebox, trying to copy the color schemes from the War of the Ring counters.

Been having fun working on some counters for a Dark Ages cyberboard gamebox, trying to copy the color schemes from the War of the Ring counters. Well, that is just fantastic. I play Dark Ages (SPI Tactical 1971) and Viking (PRESTAGS 1975) too. On the off chance anyone is interested I made a summary of differences here.
