Day 14, turn 7 for Axen:
Dawn came at last, plus some more hours passed, before Axen was finally released from his cell at the Foreign Quarter Watch Station. To keep their fight from re-starting, the man who wanted to attack Zorione was kept in an adjoining cell with a stone wall between them.
An officer who had not been present in the pre-dawn arrest talked to Axen now. "I hear you're the same halfling who defeated some undead creature running through the streets a week ago, or maybe you're the halfling who's been seen with the Harvester's Heroes. Either way...it seems you've gotten too big for your britches." The man snickered at his own height joke at Axen's expense. "Just because you've done a good deed here or there doesn't mean you should start taking the law into your own hands."
There was a bit more to the lecture than that, but Axen tuned it out. He was more interested in what was going to happen to the other guy.
"Oh...well, we're probably going to have to let him go soon too. The Bronze Unicorn did report that a girl named Zorione works for them, but we haven't been able to find her yet. Without her corroboration, we just have your word, and ...well, from what we've heard, the Coachman himself can vouch for this guy's character."
Axen was pretty used to the usual miscarriages of justice at this point. Many people were good, but others? Give them a badge and a bit of authority and they use it to push whatever prejudices they have.
All he did was murmur under his breath... "what exactly should I do if I see a burly man punching a woman on the street?"
"Oh well," Axen thought as he leaned back in his cell. "It's pretty hard to take something from someone who doesn't have anything to begin with."
Axen got up and walked out of the cell. He was rather tired, even though it was the morning. Listening to that woman and then getting in that fight had ruined any chance of a decent night of sleep.
Whenever he tried to help anyone lately, he felt like he was just wandering in circles, so he just wandered around dejectedly for a while. He went from tavern to tavern listening for rumors about his friends, who seemed to be scattered all over the city nowadays, and perhaps even for a hint about the opium dealers.

Day 14, turn 8 for Axen:
Around noon, Axen was at the Brass Rail Tavern here in the same quarter. He had still not bothered to go back and check to make sure his armor, weapons, money, and gear were still where he had stashed them. Luckily, he still had some of his coinage on him, so he could buy a good, stiff drink.
The Brass Rail was one of several basement-level gnomish taverns around the city. It had a quiet common room, full of pipe smoke, and would have felt claustrophobic to anyone taller than an elf because of its 7' high ceiling. Being a Hobbit, Axen was quite at home here, and had two other Hobbits to talk to.
"...things have been quiet, and remain quiet as long as you're good at avoiding adventure," Sanamin was saying. "Take me, for example. There was an adventuring party recruiting in here 10 days ago, but did I get involved in their nonsense? No, I kept my head down, avoided them altogether, and stayed out of the fight that happened when they wound up going at each other. Adventure is never to be sought, and adventurers are always to be avoided!"
"And don't forget half-orcs," his friend Faldal said. "Some people will give them a free pass because they've got some human in them, but you can't trust their ilk. One came trudging in here just eight days ago. Had to send him packing!"
"And traveling with a dwarf too. Never would have expected to see that," Sanamin added. "If the dwarf came from down south, though, he might have needed the half-orc for a bodyguard. I hear it's getting dangerous again in the hills, so much so that some of the gnomes up here in the city are putting off trips back home."
Axen's drink and simple conversation with the other halflings lifted his mood. He decided to go retrieve his stuff from the tree and track down Guarin, maybe to convince him to help with the opium dealers, or maybe just for some distraction. Axen still felt a ton of sympathy for Guarin, as no one deserved to be cursed away from their family for many years as he had been.

Day 14, turn 9 for Axen:
It was late afternoon when Axen returned to his tree to collect his things.
They were gone! Axen had left his things under trees before...though never for, oh, about 15 hours before. Apparently someone had come around and found the stash! He did not even really have clothes, just the quilted gambeson, or padded armor, he typically wore under his full armor. He had a few silver pieces left in a pocket of the gambeson.
The tree had been near the Molten Spigot Tavern. Even the old granny bouncer seemed to sense the little halfling was too serious this time to trouble. The tavernkeeper, Toinette was there, along with her cousin Captain Banderas. There were eight patrons in the common room, and half of them seemed to be with Banderas.
Axen asked around and found that one of the regulars had seen something earlier. "Yeah, about an hour ago, there was an ugly guy out looking around the old tree. I mean, break-a-mirror-if-he-looked-at-his-reflection ugly!" Upon further description, it sounded like it could be the man Axen had fought earlier that morning.
"Axen!" Guarin said. The ex-bandit came in and slapped Axen on the back. "What's got you down?" And after hearing about Axen's problems, Guarin said, "Well, prepare to drink up, my small friend. I know what it's like to lose everything, and the first thing you need to do is drink until you forget all about it. Don't worry about the tab; I'll pay..."
Axen drank to his heart's content and beyond with Guarin and time became a blur for a while. He found himself telling his life's story to almost anyone that would listen. He slept for a while wherever he happened to be, woke up, found Guarin again, and drank some more. When he could not find Guarin, he would buy a drink for himself.
