I'd like to get comments on this here, before I go more public with it, just to make sure I don't accidentally step on my crank. This is NOT FINAL. I also posted at K&KA, but not much response there.
The Swords & Wizardry Core Edition is finished. It likely contains minor editing mistakes, although I have been through it and it will get another set of eyes when Rob (Red Priest) does the layout.
I want to raise money for more artwork, and I am considering doing the initial release with a two-tiered approach. First, there will be the Limited First Printing - this isn't buying the book, it's contributing to the artwork fund and getting a limited edition book for free ... because I'll be asking $100 for each copy of the hardback. That nets me, I think, somewhere in the neighborhood of $75 per book. The buyer's name goes into the regular printing of the book as an art patron, on the title page. The Limited Edition would have only 25 copies, so it could conceivably raise me about $1,875 for future artwork or required expenses for warehousing and printing if I go that route. I still need to get a cover for the White Box version and a cover for the first issue of Knockspell Magazine.
On the second tier, I will cut off sales of the First Printing after one week, regardless of how many have sold. I'd only, in reality, expect a couple of sales. After the cutoff date, I will put up the second printing, at a reasonable cost. I will probably be charging a slight "profit" to continue building up the fund. This is the point at which I'll release the pdf and the MS word doc for free.
I expect that many people will turn in editing comments, and those will be consolidated into a third printing, which in reality will be the first "final" edition out there. Changes to the pdf and word doc will also be done.
I anticipate having at least one companion product at the time of launch, a little book/pdf called "Eldritch Weirdness." I had a fever last week and someone failed to watch me, and I got onto the computer. The results are about like the Arduin Grimoire on the strangeness scale, but without phasers. Fevers and prescription neurontin, coupled with clinical hypomania, are a potent mix.
Does anyone have any comments, or a better plan?
