Any ideas on how the masses of bats should be handled? I was thinking it might give the goblins the morale boost as if fighting at night but can be somewhat neutralized by a light spell as perhaps the bats would not concentrate around the lit area.

Or it could be a slight morale penalty to enemies in whatever areas they 'cover'. And/or a penalty to ranged attacks from/into the same area since they'll act as 'ablative shielding'.

I would use bats as a radius template that blocks out the sun in that area, giving goblins a bonus (or men a penalty) for fighting in the dark.

I always assumed "swarms of bats" meant bats everywhere. But this is definitely another possibility. A swarm area.

Figures needed for this army for what I want is as follows. "Light Wargs" from Dark Alliance. slag-productions.blogspot.com/p/blog-page_25.html 2 boxes Orcs set 1 and set 2 from Dark Alliance 3.bp.blogspot.com/_4jjMTlIkZh4/TBpDxOVSD2I/AAAAAAAAAuI/b37GkE0NaR8/s1600/orcs2.jpg 2 boxes each $15 seems to be the going rate per box. So $120 will get you an entire Orc Army. For the good guys, You need Elves. Light Alliance Elves look funny so it is Caesar Elves for me. www.pbtoys.de/ebay/CF102A.jpg The mix isn't great as it is very bow heavy. 3 boxes will get you plenty of variation. Only 1 box is needed of Dwarves. Caesar Dwarves or Light Alloiance Dwarves will fit the bill nicely. www.pbtoys.de/ebay/CF101A.jpg or www.angelfire.com/biz/toysoldierhq/zall72007.jpg There will be extras to be sure so Thorin and company will be no problem to represent. I actually have a few metal dwarves from Splintered light so the extra chunky metal figure will make it easy to distinguish the companions from a "normal" dwarf. Finally we come to men. Lots of ways to go here. They seemed to have sword and shield so I'd recommend maybe an Anglo-Saxon set or go full on Dark Age with some Germanic warriors.http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=1110 or www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=1228 (minus the cavalry). You can assume they all have missile weapons as well. The caesar Adventurers have suitable characters for Gandalf and Bard. www.miniknight.com/images/F104/hero888.JPG There needs to be a giant bear as well. No eagles are required. 6 boxes of troops so about $90 plus the cost of a bear. So $210 later and you can have the battle of five armies. It sounds expensive but with todays prices of metal, plastic is a pretty good alternative.

Nice find Matthew! I did note that he (Gygax) lists "Bard and Retinue" and "Dain and Retinue" as Heroes but the Hero Thranduil and Bolg are represented by single figures.

Sorry to necro this up.
I saw the movie last night. Was definitely thinking of the several heroes, fantastic monsters, and armies in terms of mass combat RPG and wargames. The bats seemed to be a morale thing. Scattering (but not routing) units, but I don't think I saw one attack.
The CGI was awesome. The battle was just amazing. The giants (ettin? Stone Giants?) literally served as heavy catapult. Awesome.
