Me too. But a check of Victors Blog shows he has just moved to Wisconsin. On top of that, I suspect he is getting ready to teach for a new semester. So, I think it will be a month or two before we hear back from him.

About right. Did I mention I have a ton of games that had to get moved? I kept looking for a U-Haul or Ryder truck in the "Death Star" size, but all they had was a 27 foot. So we had to make due.
However, I'm back. Let's pick this back up!

No kidding. As it is, this project is taking a slightly higher salience for a number of reasons. Here's a question for the assembled masses: what monsters should be included? I rather doubt we're going to include the set from EPT, simply because they are Tekumel-specific. So what to include? Thoughts on this?

I'd say don't include any, at least not in the core rules.

I'd say don't include any, at least not in the core rules. I thoroughly agree. In his Random Esoteric Creature Generator, James Raggi wrote: "The idea of a standardized monster list for anything other than exemplar purposes is probably the worst thing that happened to role-playing." A standardized list of monsters doesn't make sense to me for Swords of the Steel Throne, since the game aims to NOT be world-specific. Let referees invent their own monsters for their own worlds. A further consideration is that (I assume) Swords of the Steel Throne would be a free download. Hence, any player could download and read it. I wouldn't want any referee secrets in players' hands! That's why I think Swords of the Steel Throne should be 100% safe for players to have: character generation, spells, combat, and such things are all OK. But monsters and magic items are the purview of the referee and must not fall into players' hands. The only way to prevent this is to not include monsters or magic items in the rules. (An analogue that I'm thinking of is the Castles & Crusades Players Handbook, which is a complete game on its own, and is also 100% safe for players to memorize.)

Actually, one thought I am currently pursuing is that SotST would be available for a modest donation to the Tekumel Foundation. Perhaps making it available for free as a PDF, and books available from Lulu?
Another possibility would be to make a free game of the character creation, combat, and spells rules.
Speaking of which, we need some non-Tekumelani spells for the spells list.
I think *some* exemplar monsters would be worthwhile - but not so many as to present a complete listing.

Aren't most of the spells in EPT non-Tekumel specific? And can't those which are Tekumel-specific be generalized? Some exemplar monsters might be a good idea. The sorts I think would fit best would be giant animals and/or unique, bizarre critters made specially for Swords of the Steel Throne. I'd stay away from Greek mythologicals, things that wandered out of Tolkien, or D&D-specific monsters.

I agree with you about D&D specific monsters - Beholders, for example (and aren't they protected content anyway?). I'd be up for presenting variations on intelligent races, too. Elves could be more like Norse mythology - ranging from "svartaelfar" (dwarves of a sort) to "aelfar" (averse to cold iron, etc.). Those 3HD starting races? Include giants, maybe centaurs. (Of course, this is all just brainstorming.) As for spells, some of them are quite specific to Tekumel - DoomKill for example. Others less so. We'll strip away the Tekumel specific titles and see what we've got.

On the other hand, a short section on how to create creature stats and populate dungeons along with a few sample creatures would be very useful. Undead creatures (vampires, ghosts, ghouls, glory hands) are fairly universal/generic and might serve. Alternatively a specific mythos/biome could be choosen, like a swamp (will o wisps, lagoon men, giant snakes, crocodiles, venus flytraps) I'm flying in the dark here, but I wonder if it would be usefull to pull any generic material from Swords and Glory - stuff like DM or player advice?, to fill any gaps there might be in the text.
