Monster Manual Review at Critical HitsAt the bottom of the review, which is pretty glowing, they've also provided a monster list organized by Challenge Rating, which is apparently not in the MM itself. I would like to point out with glee that "Awakened shrub" is the first monster on the list...

I had the opportunity to flip through a copy of the Monster Manual earlier this afternoon at the FLGS after signing up for tonight's MtG prerelease. I have to say aside from a handful of pictures that were less than impressive, the book looks to be very good and got me excited to pick it up in the next week or so. The fact that they have Flumphs and Modrons was a big selling point for me as I am a fan of these oft maligned creatures if nothing more than for amusement factor. I was quite impressed with the presentations of the demons and devils, as well as dragons (with four age categories) and the lich and demilich. It is a shame they pushed back the release date for the DMG but I am sure it will be worth the wait (will now be released on Dec. 9th).

Just got my copy in the mail, and finally have time to take a decent look. Just flipping through it so far, man, I'm pretty sure that's the biggest MM they've ever published in one volume... As a side note, I'm liking the majority of the art work, too, which was something I'd been concerned about...

A semi off-topic question: can anyone find Green Slime in the new MM? I looked under "oozes" because I thought they were there in the 2E MM and I looked in the index and didn't see it there, either. Somehow I seem to have missed it....

In "3E", green slime was taken off the monsters list and transferred to a trap component. "5th ed" may be following that.

Yeah, I looked this morning and couldn't find it either, so I bet Scott's right on the mark. Tangentially, when my oldest son (10 years old) picked up the MM this morning and started paging through it, he couldn't put it down, and ended up asking if he could bring it to school with him today. The infection beginneth...

Okay, I'm going to go out on a limb here and make the following statement: Excepting the original DMG, I think this MM is the best official D&D book ever released. The artwork is IMO 75% superb (check out, frex, the myconids, the salamander, the slaad...), 20% excellent, and 5% meh. The layout is superb. Each freaking entry is so full of adventure hooks it makes me a little dizzy. It's literally jam-packed with content.
I am now ready to believe that the three core books are going to be ALL YOU EVER NEED to play this edition. And, given that they're continuing to update the Basic Rules, that stripped-down core will serve the same (abbreviated) purpose.
Tangentially, I'm also really intrigued to see the framework used for calculating CRs...

I can agree with this 100%. I love the fact that they gave an explaination of the origins of the elves' immunity to ghoul paralysis and the disturbingly flavorful creation of nightmares.
