I got to see one. I got to hold one. I got to thumb through one. My insider friend was one of the lucky ones who got a copy at GenCon. I guess WotC rewarded GMs who did eight or more sessions, something like that, and my friend was one of those guys so he got a copy. I know that some folks aren't thrilled with the preview artwork we've seen, but I think it looks great. I particularly liked some of the demons and devils therein. Anyway, I think it's only about two weeks before it gets released at my local game store. I can't wait!

Fin, I must say, for an olde-schooler, you are such a good sport!
The enthusiasm is infectious. I am still uninterested in putting my money into it.
But thanks to your posts and others, I really want to sit in a game as a player.
We'll see . . .

One thing I really like is the inclusion of Legendary actions and Lair actions for powerful monsters. After watching the Desolation of Smaug I lamented that D&D dragons just don't seem all that bad-assed compared to the way Smaug was portrayed in the movie. Legendary and Lair actions seem like an interesting way to put some awe back into the really powerful monsters.

Legendary and Lair actions seem like an interesting way to put some awe back into the really powerful monsters. Very much so. In one playtest last fall, the guy running a dragon had all sorts of sneaky stuff the dragon could do that caught us totally unaware. This one dragon could dive into a pool of fluid in its lair and come out with more hit points. He also got multiple attacks at different spots in the initiative chain. (Imagine our suprise when the DM said "okay, time for the dragon to go again." We just looked at each other, stunned.) No doubt that big nasties are now much nastier.

Legendary actions and lair actions are fun! Much better than giving the monster just more and more stats, attacks and damage. Lair actions are especially good, it makes monster lairs more than just a place with both the loot and the monster - it gives a huge edge on the monster's site against the players, making a lair a dangerous and exciting environment. I also like in the Red Dragon preview the description about what effect the dragon's presence has on it's environment. But it's a pity that we don't have liar percentage...

Legendary action are a brilliant way to make the villain absolutely terrifying. Last fall I ran I6 Ravenloft with the Next playtest and built Strand with a few Legendary actions. Very cool stuff, but I was so brain - fried by the final battle I basically forgot to use them! Ah well. Next time.
