Not sure if any of you read these type of comic books/graphic novels, but a few I've read lately that were pretty good are the IDW D&D series and the first 5 issues of Rat Queens. I read both after they were issued into compilations. Figured I'd mention them here in case anyone wanted some light reading to do in between gaming sessions.

I'm a little surprised to hear they're good. I tried IDW's D&D: Cutter mini-series and D&D: Infestation, which seemed to be a one-shot. I thought they were terrible. So the ongoing series has been much better?

I haven't read the two IDW series you mentioned so I can't compare and contrast them. I thought the PC group (Fell's Five in the series) were good representations of a typical D&D group. However, I think the writer moved to a new project or something because as far as I can tell there aren't any more coming.

When I think of D&D comics, my "gold standard" has always been: (1) Dragon magazine era "Knights of the Dinner table" (2) Early "Order of the Stick"
How do these comics compare to those two? (Not totally fair, I suppose, because the above are funny and I assume these are serious.)

Yeah they are more serious than either one of those, but they do have funny parts. The format is also different in that they are the typical comic book length issues rather than the short format that KoDT and Order of the Stick were originally presented. Rat Queens is also rated Mature due to drug use, profanity, and such. If you check out the Amazon links, they have part of each series that you can read that will give you a good idea of the tone of each.

I'm really enjoying Rat Queens, just read #7 a few days ago. It is so D&D. Kill things for gold, spend the gold on carousing (drugs, booze, men, women, and flapjacks). Conan would be proud of the Rat Queens I think.

Technically, it's not a D&D comic , but there was an rather obscure fantasy themed Marvel franchise : The saga of Crystar , which relied too heavily on the motif of "Order versus Chaos" (with Neutrality between the two) not to suspect some influence of D&D en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Saga_of_Crystar

There was? Now THAT I don't remember at all. Probably 'cause I was too busy collecting edgy, indie, adult stuff like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles...

They didn't have the comics or the toy packaging, so they were just the mystery crystal warrior toys. Thanks for solving the mystery for me 30 years later.

Hey guys, I self-publish a new comic called Legends of Log. It's a giant log that carries an ax and yells "TIMBERRRRRR"! Sounds odd I know, but it's all based on sword and sorcery and DnD that I played. Take a look and let me know what you think. www.legendsoflog.comThanks
