jcstephens, I completely know where you're coming from! I've realised since discovering the old-school gaming community that I actually have an old-school attitude towards everything in life. I am also 30 (well, 34) going on 65! I think the reason for this is that EVERYTHING in nowadays is so commercialised, dumbed down and "macdonaldised"*. *There's an old sociology book called "The MacDonaldization of Society" which pretty much sums up how I feel about where the modern world went wrong - "rules" replacing common sense and creativity, and everything being reduced to the lowest common denominator in the pursuit of short-term profits. Okay, rant over, sorry!

Welcome to jcstephens, aneoth, and akiyama. jc, sorry I did not catch up to your post sooner to welcome you. Akiyama, I think your rant is how many of us feel with a certain attitude towards rules etc. hence here we are in this forum. I've had a hell of a time finding anyone to play AD&D, much less od&d, some of it might be my sales pitch as I'm not a natural in that department. However, I'm going to keep at it until I have a group to play. Even the AD&D guys I've found want to play a pretty set way without surprises ie: the Giant Series over and over again, elves are good never bad etc. Anyways, that's no biggie like minded folk are out there I'm sure. Welcome all to the boards.

Anyway, welcome one and all.

I'm Randall, currently living in Waco, TX. While I haven't played or GMed in a number of years, I started playing D&D in the summer of 1975 just after I graduated from high school. I had picked up a D&D boxed set that spring but didn't get a chance to play for a few months.
At first, I wasn't all that enthused, probably because I was trying to teach myself to DM and teach wargamer friends to play. However, when I went to college that fall, I met a few others who had played and were playing and was hooked. I DMed weekly sessions from winter 1975 to 1989 or so, then less regular games until 1993 or so. I haven't played much since.
While I bought every version that TSR published, what my main group played most of the time was a sort of weird OD&D/AD&D hybrid with a good number of house rules to make everything fit my campaign worlds. This happened because we just added material we liked from the AD&D books as they came out in the late 70s to our ongoing D&D game. I've also ran BECMI/RC games in the Known World. Not to mention large numbers of other RPGs including some homebrews.
I was initially excited when D&D3 was published. My excitement lasted until I read the core rulebooks and then quickly died. I skimmed the 3.5 rules when they were published and did not even buy them. Until I discovered Labyrinth Lord and the Goblinoid Games forum, I did not realize that there were fans of older versions of D&D out there.
If I ever manage to get another D&D game going, it would most likely use OD&D rules as they are simple and easy, making it possible to run a good campaign without devoting hours to prep work. Finding local players would be the problem.

Hello, I am Havard. I just realized you have a Blackmoor section, which made me register immediately. I am one of those who unfortunately haven't had the chance to play OD&D yet, but I definately see its appeal. I see alot of familiar "faces" here, that's nice. *waves* Havard

Welcome, Havard.
Your Blackmoor page is one of the best out there, as I mention in my thread on Blackmoor resources. I got tired of updating the DF list of threads because there doesn't seem to be much Blackmoor love at DF, but I put more of my energy here nowadays and hopefully you'll find even more goodies at this site.
(For those who don't know Havard, he's one of the top Blackmoor experts, other than those who actually played in Dave's campaign.)
Again, welcome to Havard!

Welcome, Havard! It is so good to see you here. I agree with Finarvyn you are one of the top experts on Blackmoor, and have one of the best websites on the subject I have found. (He was also the first to urge my participation in these forums when I discovered Greg posting in Rafael's forum, The Wayfarers Inn.) I look forward to talking to you again.

I'm from eastern Texas. I've been gaming since the Holmes book through AD&D 1st ed. At 41 I missed out just barely on the OD&D stuff, since most of my time was spent on monster movies during the 74-76 period! My gaming group has recently dissolved and I'm so picky about who to play with that I've gotten myself some time to get into the original D&D set-up, so I'm going over all the rules and making up some fresh dungeons. I have a lot to learn still, but because of experience I'm finding it pretty easy to absorb for the most part, and I'm hoping to grab a few from my old group to maybe actually play as soon as I finish this dungeon. I'm also hoping to make some friends on here that might be interested in playing using Messenger. I tried that a few years ago with a group and it went really well.

Hey Dogbreath welcome to the boards. I find OD&D so easy to read and yet it's a total riddle as well, it's a fun game.

Hi everyone,
Brickman checking in to say Hi. I'm happy to see so many familiar faces... er... handles! We play up here in Northern California in the hills. No one has seen any verifiable dwarves up here, but there's a definitely a gnome or two.
It's really cool to see an active and happening board like this. I've never held the original 3 books in my hands but I bought them last year in PDF form. After reading through all of them and a couple of supplements, I thought "gosh, this is SO close to AD&D 1e". After a little more thinking I came up with "Oh wait. AD&D 1e is SO close to OD&D".
Hey, I didn't say I was a genius.

Hello all, I thought that maybe I ought to "introduce" myself since I've already posted. ;-) Born in '64, I caught the fantasy bug at a young age after being forced to read The Hobbit for Great Books. After that I couldn't find fantasy literature fast enough. You can read more about it here if you like: jfaller.vwh.net/wordpress/?p=9I grew up in the Loveland Colorado area and did a slew of gaming in Boulder at the University of Colorado in the 80's. Most of this was AD&D... It was the system of play that we as a group had been attracted to. Initially we played Holmes but the local game store wasn't carrying anything other than books and modules for AD&D, so our hands were forced. This was somewhere around '77 or so I think... Fast forward over years and years of following Dungeons and Dragons loyally through thick and thin (Holmes, AD&D 1e, 2e, 3.x and now 4e)... Something happened though with the announcement of 4e, I had started losing the flame. My desire was dimming and I couldn't place my finger on the reason why. And then one night, as I was sitting around the table with my current gaming group I realized that we were all talking about rules... All of us. None of use were talking about what was going on in the story. I was horrified. What had happened? Well long story short, I went out and scoured the net in an attempt to find something "else". I discovered Castles and Crusades. I know that this isn't the place for that... But with that I also found the desire to get back to my roots. I dug out my original Holmes book...And had an epiphany, this thin book seemed to have nearly everything that I needed to have fun playing a game of Dungeons and Dragons. So here I am today. I play C&C with my daughters because it was what was at hand. But I'll tell you this, after this game, I'm seriously thinking of digging out the Holmes set and seeing if I can conjure up the same imagery that floated before my eyes as a child. All that said, it's wonderful seeing a "resurgence" of interest in the game's roots. And to find out that there are people out there who have never dropped the torch. This is a wonderful forum and I absolutely love reading everything that each of you has to say about this wonderful hobby. Game on.

hey guys i have been watching the boards for awhile now and decided to go ahead and register.. well my background is.. i'm from Houston Texas but i live in Nashville,TN and pretty much have all my life.. i started gaming when i was about 9 years old but ironically enough not with d&d but with the orginal star wars rpg and alot of avalon hill games.. i got into d&d around the same time through (2e) and have been playing ever since.. currently i am a DM who runs two games one being a AD&D 1e homebrew of sorts and the other being a traditional od&d game... i also still enjoy really any type of game be it card games, minature games, board games, whatever but my favorite will still be old d&d.... i am also a musician by trade really and play guitar and drums as well as bass and a little piano.. and music, art, and movies are really my other prime interests besides playing d&d..

Hey gang! A few of you know me already from here and Dragonsfoot as ' Meepo'. About 6 or 7 months back I basically dropped off the map for a variety of reasons, but the main one being my gaming group of 18 years was decimated by not one but two of my players being sent to jail (don't judge me or my other friends though, we had no idea they were criminals!). This event along with much of the general negativity that was found on Dragonsfoot at the time, effectively burned me out on gaming and in a foolish move, I sold off my entire D&D collection and closed out all of my forum accounts. Well, despite my rash decision, I did save one thing: my Holmes boxed set w B1 & B2 and a set of dice. Ya know, just in case. And today I am glad I did, because OD&D has been heavy on my mind lately and even without an active group to play with, my creative energy has been burning a hole in my pocket, so to speak. Time to reprint out my Holmes Companion and 3LB PDF's and get to work... In my absence I've also heard about the work done with Fight On! magazine and will be ordering my copy from Lulu as soon as I can shake up a link. This sounds wonderful and couldn't be timed better with 4th editions release! Has anything else big happened in the OD&D world (besides tragedy, of course) of late? Good to be back and look forward to chatting and sharing with everyone, Jim 'Meepo is dead' Adams

I'm super-thrilled to have you back in the scene, Jimwise! Here's the link to Fight On! #1: stores.lulu.com/FightOn. Thanks for the warm welcome and link. Your blog is daily reading for me (even the last 7 months!) so I appreciate it all the more! Can anyone submit to 'Fight On!'? And if so, are there any guidelines or desired articles? The other big thing right now is Swords & Wizardry, an OGL retro-clone of OD&D. Ahh, so someone finally came around to making one of these for our beloved rules, very cool! Thanks for the info! ;D
