The classic Traveller system mass-combat rules were Striker, but you probably already knew that. Also, one could roll up military characters and muster out as usual, but then join an elite and well-funded mercenary unit... Just remember, knowing is half the battle... with the remaining half consisting of equal parts blue lasers and red lasers.

[Sharron to Logan] "Sure. You're buyin'. As for the cargo prospects, you'll have to ask Mother. I prefer trading bullets and blows." ffilz, Sharon has her sword strapped to her back. If we can "open carry" concealable weapons, then she'll bring her revolver too. Mother will go ahead and make the transaction for the cargo sale, then start looking for any prospects. She'll contact Logan and Sharron everyone if there are any "hiccups".

I still have my White Box box... is there a list of changes from the first print run? I don't think much is different (a number tweaked here and there maybe); it's mostly a reformatting of the 4th printing material and error fixes. The PDF is free.

Or Acerak having his own Wehrmacht zombie battalion? For the win.

Another example is the campaign area described in the original Temple of Elemental Evil module. It basically covers the three Greyhawk hexes centered on Hommlet, Nulb, and the Temple. It's true that the setting is well fleshed out for this one, but restricting yourself to just what is included in T1-4, it can easily be fleshed out into something else entirely through sandbox play.
For the "Sturmgeschütz and Sorcery" hexes, I think it would be great fun for the players to be fighting the Nazis; plus, what if the Nazi's form a new axis with the Goblins? The exchange of occult practices and military technology between the two factions would be terrifying.

The Cleric XP progression used to rub me the wrong way, but if you're playing BTB (approximately), the difference is negligible in actual play. The Cleric is really never more than one level higher than the other characters, and since their spells aren't as "theatrical" as the Magic-user spells, and they're not quite as effective as the Fighter in combat - not to mention any self-imposed nerfing via role-play - I see it all as a wash.

OOC: Well I'd do it, but I'm already running two characters. I'm good with Henry being captain and Victor being an NPC.
Mother thinks we should take the deal.
Sharron is going to hit the Brass Candle while the ship gets ready, keeping an ear to the general conversation for anything lucrative (or maybe rumors about Bastinadi).

Unable to attend this year, which sucks because there is an awful lot of cool stuff going on. Say hi to Satine for me. Looking at the hotel situation, it looks like the ones mentioned on the site are completely booked already. When do badges typically go on sale for the following year? I'm never going to make it to XI unless I start saving now...

A little late to the game, but I'm currently intently reading the 5e DMG & PHB. WhhhhhAAAAAAAAAT!!?! Now I admit, I'm a dyed-in-the-wool "grognard", but I have to say, 5e isn't all that bad. It's even playable.

Seeing as it will contain scans of two printings each of the original B1 and B2, plus M&T assortments for B1, and 5e conversions for everything, I think this is going to be a must-get item for me.
I'd love to see X1/X2 get the same treatment.

So the planes can be reached "by foot" so to speak? Why yes, young padawan. But only if you approach at the proper angle of bilateral transmogrification...I've always thought that they were like other planes of existence.. Worlds that exist "overtop" of our own. Above? Beneath? It is all relative, grasshopper.Seriously though, it's OD&D. What "planes" are is not explicitly defined (as evidenced by this thread), so it's up to one's own twisted imagination how they work. There are some great ideas here in this thread. I'm happy enough with how it became treated in AD&D and beyond, and travel to such places has rarely come up in the games I've played in, so I tend not to worry too much about it.

I've never understood what the heck "planes" were, so I just don't use 'em. They are unknowable to we mortal few! (Or some such nonsense) I've always viewed them as a mix of other-worldly realms of myth (places where only mythical heroes like Odysseus dared tread) and Zelazny's dimensional Shadow Worlds. Rather than trying to dream up entirely new "worlds" for your players to tromp about in, it may be easier to just think of them as parallel dimensions/universes that are thematically different. Example: The elemental plane of fire would be exactly as your current campaign world is, but everything is burnt/burning and rivers/seas are lava and ash.

I agree that you should see what sort of price you can get for the Electronics. We can always reject the offer if it isn't want we want. Yea, if you use a broker, they would be disappointed if the sale didn't go through, but understanding. Do you wish to use a broker? Mother tries schmoozing with a starport worker that we have regular contact with in an effort to get a lead on a reliable broker (streetwise?). OOC: We should probably wait and see what our profit from this trip will be before deciding on the fuel situation.

It's likely that Dave/Gary et al had their own concept of the "planes" back before any official publication of rules regarding such, but they only had so much room to work with in the three LBB's, so their ideas may have ended up on the chopping room floor. It's also likely that the original intent was to leave such material to the imaginations of would-be DM's. I like Stormcrow 's take, though. Hmmm. I could swear that the positive/negative material planes were introduced in OD&D, but I can't seem to find a reference anywhere. Anyone know when they first seeped into the primum materiae?

It's all strictly opinion on my part; play however you wish to play (if you're reducing the treasure rewards from the standard, then level progression will obviously not rocket the characters through levels).
All I meant was, if the players know that XP is split (just like treasure), they aren't going to be as willing to partake in large adventuring fellowships. If the XP is the same regardless of the number of party members, then players will want to pad their party roster with as many warm bodies as they can (success/survival in numbers, etc.).

I'm with @gronanofsimmerya on this one. I've always played by splitting the XP. By not splitting the XP, the system rewards large group play and advancement is probably too fast. Splitting XP encourages small group play (and individual play as Mike points out).
FWIW, the Holmes rules specifically state in the section on experience:

What exactly is the "whole swords and arrows" rule? I don't see anything about it in my Monsters & Treasure or Greyhawk books... Nothing in the OD&D/Holmes rules that I'm aware of (unless it's buried in sub-text somewhere). In AD&D (1ed), it's mentioned in the description for the skeleton in the Monster Manual.

I find it amusing that the same saber-rattling crops up in anything game related (and other hobbies too, I suppose). "I acknowledge X helped create [insert hobby here] and/or is a widely respected individual, but X didn't/doesn't know what he/she is talking about." or "Rule Y is the product of the out-dated thinking of dinosaurs. I've invented <a needlessly complicated> rule Z to elevate this from Game to Virtual Reality!" Sorry. I'm in a cranky soap-box kind of mood. Feel free to ignore me

Never had a problem with XP = GP. It makes perfect sense within the D&D framework.
A nice little house-rule for those that have a hard time swallowing the standard XP rule: PC's have to spend the gold between adventures in order for it to count as XP - represents training, upkeep, and research costs.
