Pardon me if my question is naive, but i am a neophyte-
As far as i understood, the most ancient "relics" of our hobby can be traced back and summarized in two games, namely "Dragons at Dawn" and "Champions of Zed".
They contain the oldest rules/style of play in existence.
If this analysis is correct, may i ask which of the two can be regarded as "the oldest"?
Thanks in advance.

I noticed that there is an interesting analysis on combat, split in two parts, which is pretty "academic" in flavour (and which i appreciate very much, by the way) at the Immersiveink website, here: COMBATNow, since these series of articles have been written in 2017, it seems obvious to me that they were not incorporated in the original Delving Deeper boxed set, which was published in 2011 by Brave Halfling Publishing. Or am i wrong? Were these considerations applied at the time when DD was release for the first time?

Is there still a place where i can buy a softcover (or even better, an hardcover) edition of Dragons at dawn?
It seems that at Lulu it's no longer available.

Delving Deeper is the opposite. Its od&d for players who thought the 3lbbs weren't difficult and esoteric enough. WoTE has a head for number-crunching and picking through the rules for details. All of the complexity and esoteric-ism of the 3llbs, FCC, and chainmail has somehow been retained, yet its incredibly easy, quick, and intuitive to use. DD is more faithful, SW:wb is more minimalist. Thanks to all of you for your quick replies. Now i definitely got a clearer idea. But,pardon my ignorance on the matter, what does FCC stand for?

Hello,
someone can explain to me what is the difference between "Sword & Wizardry" white box (the very first edition which came out in 2010 in a boxed set, published by Brave halfling with a cover where some characters were fighting against a dragon) and "Delving Deeper" boxed set? (It was also released as a boxed set in 2011 and now it's out of print).
Which is the most faithful to old OD&D? Which is the most minimalist game? (I mean, that which takes into account only the three original booklets).

Yes,those adventures by Dimension six were pretty good, though the game master had to add several details to fill the holes. But the plot was awesome and inspiring.I made the adventure available online on my blog some time ago.
As for P&P, I am not playing it now nor other games. P&P to me is almost the perfect game,I remember that it took me weeks the first time in order to learn it,but once you learn it you are flabbergasted by the depth and logical unity of all the rules.
Once you learn it you can create a character in fifteen minutes, otherwise when you first approach the game you need an hour. Combat is beautifully handled and I love the way shields and armors play a central role in it. I miss Powers & Perils and I would really like to write a retroclone.

Hello Mr. Gronan, my question is simple: did you ever meet Richard Snider (co-creator of "Adventures in fantasy" together with Dave Arneson and creator of "Powers & Perils" rpg)?
If so, it would be wonderful if you could share some memories of the man with us.
At the very least i would be very interested. For my part, i am a big fan of his game and i think he should deserve more recognition in the history of our hobby.
Thanks in advance.

Beasts, Men & Gods: A Fantasy Role Play System, (1980) by The Game Masters (Bill Underwood). I've never really sat down and digested this game as I intended to use it at the time for ideas and source material. I seem to remember a discussion on these boards (or perhaps not), so I'm glad that I found my copy and will take a new look at it. I doubt that there was ever a second printing or edition of this game - in any case, this is the first printing. The Ysgarth Rule System, by Ragnarok Enterprises, 1982, by David Nalle. Six digest sized booklets still in their original ziploc baggie!!!!! They include: I - The Fantasy Character, II - Battlecraft, III - The Arcane Arts, IV - Holy Orders, V - The Fantasy World, and the unnumbered sixth book - The Last Song of Hergest (scenario). I seem to remember buying this just prior to moving down here TO the "edge of the world" part of Kansas 32 years ago and I evidently never got round to even looking at it. Assuming that I don't lose it again this move (!!!), I very much look forward to doing so now. The Spawn of Fashan, by The Games of Fashan, 1981, (Kirby Lee Davis). This is an almost mythical game and also rumored to be the absolute worst role-playing game ever. I purchased this copy at the Denver World Science Fiction Convention, "Denvention II", in September of 1981 from the author in a booth. It is labelled "Special Denvention II Edition" and he signed it to me and it is even notarized!!! (Good Grief! Maybe if he was Gary Gygax or someting . . .) Somewhere on the net is a very good but very negative review of this "system" and I need to find that again so I can then enjoy trying to make sense of these pages . . . I doubt if I'll ever use anything I find in this book, but it will be good for both a laugh and a trip down memory lane . . . Well, you discovered some real gems, no doubt about it. Beasts, men & gods was a real rarity before someone started a petition on an old-school blog and succedeed in getting in touch with the author who was willing to re-publish it in a 2nd edition. But the first edition that you have is still pretty rare. Spawn of fashan resurfaced in the world wide web in 2014 (and i was pretty much involved in that ), now everyone can easily find a copy of it making a google search. As for Ysgarth original booklets, they are what i am actually most interested in among your possessions. I own the complete ruleset: YSGARTHwhich was very expensive but was worth it. I was looking for the original booklets, i can go as far as to say that it is the last piece still missing in my collection of old-school fantasy role-playing games (you can see many photos of them in my blog if you're interested- clicking on my profile),and i am currently exchanging e-mails with a fellow collector in Germany in order to have them scanned for digital preservation. I deeply believe in the importance of this kind of preservation for future generations and i own a digital copy of almost every fantasy rpg of the past, most of them were scanned by myself with much time and effort, at times ruining the books a little bit but giving in this way the chance to people from the future to look at them. Several among them are super-rare nowadays after 30 years since the dawn of the hobby, so they are just going to become even rarer in decades from now. That's why i merrily wrote that we had to talk about these topics in private...

I would especially like to hear comments from anyone with experience with David Nalle's Ysgarth Rule System. Man, we should really talk about Ysgarth in private

An obscure 14 page booklet published in 1986 detailing an alternative combat system for AD&D 1st edition. Proportional combat system
