Well, the trailer is out. It looks weird and funny. Folks might think that this is might be some form of shameless Christian propaganda, but it notes that Great Cthulhu is vary much real, so if it is, they just invalidate themselves. Oops! For those that never " AR-PEE-GEE!!!" before, role-playing games are big drunken frat-parties, where the magic is real, and your subconscious makes imaginary harm real, because... Well..? The Lawnmower Man was scientifically accurate or something! It sounds fun! So, would anyone be interested in seeing it?

Isn't that some kind of stealth parody?

Isn't that some kind of stealth parody? Quit likely. If I remember correctly, this movie was the end product of a big Kickstarter campaign. Even though the producers said it was serious business, I got the impression that is was going to be a stealth parody and they assumed that most role-players could tell out-of-hand. It would be funny if the end result would become outright Poe's Law on Chick and Kirk Cameron-type viewers. And still, to my knowledge, Jack Chick signed away his rights to Dark Dungeons, so he would to be unable to contest the movie's production or release if he objected to it in any way. By the way, has anyone seen the movie Zero Charisma yet?

Isn't that some kind of stealth parody? Nope. The producer/creator only had to take the content line by line and produce a "serious" treatment of Chick's work. The end result merely outlines how ridiculous his assertions were to the point of being comical.

Yeah it is very clever. By doing the comic into a movie and treating the comic as a serious and true source material it highlights the total stupidity and ridiculousness of the original 'work'. Of course I am sure it will also be used by some as Chick intended, shown to kids in religious groups to illustrate the dangers of D&D.

For me, satire is funniest when it's equal opportunity. Alexander Payne-Election, Citizen Ruth, Sideways, About Schmidt, the Descendants, Nebraska-does this almost perfectly. And to make it even richer he has some sort of affection for almost everyone on all sides. Otherwise, satire can appear mean or descend into mere agitprop. The preview of Dark Dungeons makes it look like it skewers everyone, including RPG players themselves-not too hard, obviously. Has anyone here seen Fellowship of the Dice? It mixes a very funny but cuttingly on-target fictional story about an ongoing RPG group with (what appear to be) non-fiction documentary style clips of cool/weird/funny RPG players being interviewed at conventions.

The best camp is played with a totally straight face. This may be the best I've seen since Max von Sydow as Ming the Merciless.

By the way, has anyone seen the movie Zero Charisma yet? I hope this doesn't count as necroing, I don't come here very often. yes, I did see "Zero charisma" and liked it. Had some funny parts, and I thought the guy did a great job portraying quite a few people I know, in different ways.

Well, I didn't know how people would feel about posting on a thread a month old. I guess that isn't TOO old KillianRed was the name of my very first PC. Was the first name I could think of!

Its good to hear that it is good. I have been meaning to check it out, but I have been forgetting to do so.

This isn't one of those stuffy, rules-bound forums where you can't raise an old thread. I've seen people comment on threads that were four years old! If you have something to add, go ahead and add it.

I don't understand a lot of forums' resistance to writing to old threads. It makes more sense to update an old thread on a topic than to create a new one. I think it has something to do with the short attention spans of kids these days.

I was at a retro-movie review site, That Guy with the Glasses, where two reviewers were given access to a screening of Dark Dungeons, and they spend ten-plus minutes talking about the movie. They don't give too much away, and they give their views form a gamers' prospective. They both agree that it was funny and brilliant. From what was said, its a parody of the track that did not go overboard to make fun of the source material, as the tracks tend to be silly and outlandish on their own right. If you want to see it, you can stream it here. They seem to have a pay-what-you-like pricing, hoping to get some funding for more indie film projects. Oh, and while looking for info about the film's production, I found this little gem called THAC0: The Movie. (I do not think its related to the people who made Dark Dungeon, but its still worth checking out.)
