A fourth level lawful fighting man is a hero.
A fourth level chaotic fighting man is an anti-hero.
A fourth level neutral fighting man is a lycanthrope?

A neutral FM risks at most 1-6 damage for handling an enchanted sword of the wrong alignment; lawfuls and chaotics risk 2-12 damage. Chaotic types will attack lawfuls on sight, and vice versa. Neutrals don't have this liability. Neutrals can, plausibly, deal with both lawfuls and chaotics--though presumably not both at the same time! Neutrals can act more in accordance with what is best for themselves than should lawfuls. I.e., they would have no qualms about "borrowing" gear/coins from slain fellows rather than return it to their next of kin, as should a lawful sort. Neutrals can bring other neutral types into service, including: pixies, griffons, animals, ogres, wyverns, minotaurs, etc. Neutrals are generally unaffected by magic specifically targeting good/law, or evil/chaos. There must be more, I'm sure

Back in the early days of Greyhawk pretty much everybody was Neutral, and if you had enough intelligence you learned the languages of Law and Chaos, simply so you could potentially negotiate with anybody.
We ran or talked our way out of a lot of stuff. Wandering monsters are good for nothing but losing hit points to.

Yeah pretty much every character I've played has been neutral (maybe every one?), and the majority I have DM'd. The rest split 50-50 with law/good and chaos/evil alignments.

I often choose Neutral types myself, when I choose (lately, I tend to roll a six -sided to determine alignment)

A fourth level neutral fighting man is a reluctant hero.
