Background: Ramon was raised in a Velunese monastery of St. Cuthbert outside Zurastock. He was left at the monastery anonymously during a period of famine in the surrounding region. The monks took to the cheerful young man and taught him the simple and practical truths of their faith. Among the monks he proved to be a well-meaning, if sometimes forgetful young man. His jolly demeanor and compassionate nature, paired with wisdom beyond his years, led the abbot of the monastery to give him over to the Order of Billets of the church as a teenager. With them he endured the educational bullying that dealt with some of his forgetfulness. His simple background, modest beginnings, and caring heart were judged a good fit and upon his elevation to acolyte he formally became a billet. He has only begun to learn the names of his assigned parishioners but he has already impressed his supervising priest with his devotion to the work.

Background: Vicent is the third son of a noble family in Verbobonc. He grew up in the viscounty’s capital city where his father, already having trained one son to be his heir and paid for a second to seek entry in the Knights of the Hart, followed the usual route and offered his brightest, but youngest son, to the Church of St. Cuthbert. After a comfortable childhood and excellent training by the family priest, Vicent entered the training for the priesthood as a teenager. He recognized the opportunity his father had unwittingly given him, and began plotting a way toward the top of the Church. He joined the Chapeaux as soon as he was made an acolyte and has been sent to a new parish church to expand church membership in the area.

Background: Ximo was born in a small village in the very southernmost reaches of Furyondy. His father was the village miller and known far and wide as a good and fair man. Ximo, on the other hand, was a clumsy and mildly unpopular young man. But he had a talent for numbers and helped his father with the sums in the mill. When Ximo was 14 he mistakenly revealed to one of the local baron’s tax collectors an error in the tax collector’s calculations of Ximo’s father’s tax obligation. In return the tax collector arbitrarily doubled the amount due. Shortly thereafter Ximo was sold into a clerk’s apprenticeship by his father.
Ximo’s master, Adrià, was a strict taskmaster and a secret magician. He mostly used his very limited magical knowledge to deal with minor tasks in his work spaces. The two of them wandered from minor noble employer to minor noble employer. All the while, Ximo would secretly study Adrià’s spellbook. Eventually the young man was caught performing a minor cantrip. Adrià punished Ximo severely but then, inscrutably, began teaching the young man the arts of magic as he understood them.
Eventually Adrià and Ximo ended up working for a branch of the nobles of Penwich. Only two months after they began their work there and one month after Ximo’s nineteenth birthday, Adrià died. As best anyone could guess he had eaten some bad fish and never recovered. Ximo inherited his master’s spellbook and equipment. However, his master’s employer was left in the awkward position of employing an apprentice clerk who had done little to distinguish himself. The Lord of Penwich decided to send Ximo away. Milord Penwich had a son serving in the Temple of the Heavenly Virtues in Verbobonc City. He dispatched Ximo with the young man’s latest allowance to the city to check on his son. Ximo reluctantly accepted and set off for the city the next day.
