The goal is to recreate, using legally available material, the gameplay experience. In other words, you should be able to run any module or campaign using DD that you could with certain older editions of a well-known FRPG.
Changes have already been made based upon fan feedback. Nothing less than a carbon copy will serve for some, but unfortunately, this is simply not possible. There will therefore be changes in some areas such as XP progression, the order in which the material is presented, and the monsters included; to cite just a few examples.

I believe dubeers nailed it when he wrote: The goal is to recreate, using legally available material, the gameplay experience. DD includes many subtle but necessary changes to the exacting minutiae of the original -- some of these may be particularly noticeable in the various tables of figures which folks have grown so accustomed to over the years. Some of the other notable changes are the inclusion of a few additional spells, and monsters which are mentioned only in passing in the 3LBBs get their own entries in DD. While the order and manner in which information is presented in DD is altered, by and large I believe this improves on the organisation of the original. Despite these, the overall game play experience is as it always has been; pretty darn awesome!
