I'm glad I found this post cause I've been meaning to purchase WotRP since I first heard of it but somehow managed to completely forget. No longer! As I will soon be running an OD&D campaign with a healthy dose of science fiction and outer space, now is the time. Can't wait to read it cover to cover!

I see that WARRIORS OF THE RED PLANET has a nifty old-school new cover. Is the 2E book different, or is it just 1E reskinned?

My copy came in from Lulu not too long ago. I have not put the book down since! It is fantastic! There is a lot of great rules and ideas, and with great art that captures the flavor of the genre. CharGen alone feels like a true " Mutants & Magic" game system with the Gamma World-styled classes and races available and how those can fit alongside standard D&D/OSR races and classes. The saving throw sets are neat — they remind me of the sets from Mutant Future. I'm loving the monsters, airship rules and appendices. There is so much great things about it! Swords & Plants/Planetary Romance, Pulp Science-Fantasy, Serialized Space Operas, Dying Earth & Post-Apocalypse Science-Fantasy, Silver Age Comic Books, Space Operas with Lightsticks & Space-Wizards — Its hard to imagine what this rulebook cant cover! S&W is a good choice for the core system, as it is simple and universal enough to convert to nearly any old-school D&D-based system. Once I get a Swords & Plants-themed game started, I'll likely use Crimson Blades 2 as core (which is also S&W-based) alongside WotRP, and some other rules and game charts here and there to round things out ( The Metamorphica has become so indispensable at my game table, and Petty Gods also has useful content). There are some minor little issues here and there with the text, but they are so small, they are easily over-looked or ignored by experienced gamers. The only thing I'm confused about is Social Standing, as I have not seen it used in other D&D-based systems so I have no context to apply it. I know it goes without saying that it works like Charisma but based reputation and popularity instead of charm and looks. What I'm wondering is how one gains or looses it, and how the Basic Ability Modifier is applied with it. Personally, the only thing I would change about the book is have tasteful nudity in the art, even if its just simple "T&A" semi-nudity. I know a number of readers would object to such "displays", as well as the potential for distributors to reject it on their respective platforms, and as such, would limit it's availability. But that is my own personal preference, in an ideal world. To Al and Thomas: d**n good work! d_/ \_b

My copy came in from Lulu not too long ago. So you bought from Lulu? I see that DriveThru has a Print+PDF option and I don’t know how DriveThru’s print quality compares to that of Lulu. Anyone use both? I have not put the book down since! It is fantastic! Is this a general statement, or a comparison between 1E and 2E? (I already have a copy of 1E but am drooling over the cover for 2E, but if the content isn’t that different I may not splurge on a new edition.) There are some minor little issues here and there with the text, but they are so small, they are easily over-looked or ignored by experienced gamers. The only thing I'm confused about is Social Standing, as I have not seen it used in other D&D-based systems so I have no context to apply it. I know it goes without saying that it works like Charisma but based reputation and popularity instead of charm and looks. What I'm wondering is how one gains or loses it, and how the Basic Ability Modifier is applied with it. The only “old school” experience I have with this comes from the old City State of the Invincible Overlord booklets from Judges Guild. The CSIO had a scale (if I recall correctly) from one to 20, where one was slave and 20 was Emperor. I think it was assumed that folks would go up or down in social standing through role-play and I don’t recall any point system on how to go up or down. Social standing would be pretty darned important on Barsoom, I’m thinking, because of the amount of honor that folks there strive for. The whole “which weapon do I defend with” thing is a classic example of how Barsoomians are very conscious of doing things proper.

Well, I couldn't hold off any longer. Dropped some $$ on RPGnow for the print and PDF combo, just to get the cool "old school" cover. Sadly, it should take a couple of weeks for the printed version to arrive. (Sigh) Hope the cover comes with that texture. I'm gonna be a little bummed if it's slick and glossy.

Paperback came in yesterday. Cover slick (as expected) but the printed version looks amazing. Glad I bought the thing and am enjoying reading it.

I’m about to give in and order it as well, how does it compare to the 1st edition? Is it different enough to justify the purchase?

I’m about to give in and order it as well, how does it compare to the 1st edition? Is it different enough to justify the purchase? Honestly, I haven't looked at my 1E copy for a while. I really fell in love with the new cover and the rest of the book was an added bonus. If I get a chance to find my other copy, I'll try to compare the two and give better feedback.
