For close to a year, all of the OD&D games that I ran used the Chainmail man-to-man and troop system to resolve combat. We loved it. Quick, deadly, and you got to roll a bunch of D6's. When a party of 23 brave adventurers (including NPC hirelings) ran into a room with 60 goblins, the resolution was soooo much easier. I'm guessing that little to none of the Chainmail system is part of the WoTC OGL? I'd like to do a supplement, with the help of a few others, to bring Chainmail troop combat resolutions into DD in as cleanly as possible. (heck, it may only take 1 double sided page with a chart) When I use troop rules, we use pure HD, not hit points. So, a one HD goblin is dead with one "hit." A 2 HD fighter can only fight with one HD once he's been "hit" once.... (each HD is the fighting ability of one "man" from the original troop rules) A 4 HD hero fights as four men until he receives 4 hits and is reduced to 0 HD and is dead/or unconscious. I always started PC's out at 4th level which had varying, but more than one HD depending on class. Anybody else in? The goal is to keep it as simple, as open, and as DD-like as possible. The attached picture is from one of our larger scale battles at a local library where our PC's and about 30 stormed a baddie's keep. (using WoTC mini-figures, and Games Workshop LoTR figures, and wooden building blocks) Please notice the inclusion of kids.:-) Attachments:

SMK, have you seen Delta's "Book of War"? He was done a wonderful job there, and it is nigh on exactly what you're after.
The few pages you suggest could (perhaps?) add the additional monsters that are detailed explicitly in DD to BoW?

Kesher, yeah it was a lot of fun. Kids and adults alike had a blast. I'm the baldy on the right during a very short experiment without my usual goatee.
Simon, I'll have to look for it!

Guys, I purchased, printed and skimmed through BoW. I look forward to play testing, though I confess I still have a lot of love for Chainmail! ;D

I like the idea but I have little time right now. I have thought of doing a skirmishy d&d extension for a long time. What time fraame are you thinking of? Work slacks off for me in January.

Time frame? Hell, Jim, why'd ya have to go and use that kind of language? I'm chronically ADHD, what the hell does a timeframe have to do with anything? ;D Sent from my ADR8995 using proboards

Meanwhile, I've been reading BoW.... I like it!! In fact, I'm gonna give it a go for a playtest. See how well it may work with DD (in my taste)

Last night, the boys and I ended our Christmas Day with a play test of BoW. We three really liked I! A lot of what we liked about Chainmail (abstract simplicity) with adaptability to D&D/DD, etc. I'd like to maybe bring together common stats for Delving Deeper PC's and monsters on a single sheet.
Simon, Cameron, John, Dave, could either of you PM the monster tables from DD to me in Word/OpenOffice format? I think I could just add some columns to the tables and we'd be nearly complete. Then I'll probably add some columns to the class level charts and bring them all together in a few pages. I'm going to contact Daniel, the author of BoW, perhaps some of what I'm looking for has already been done somewhere.
Happy holidays!

I only have the early drafts of DD, Simon reworked a lot of the bestiary. So, the PDF Dave sent you is probably the best way to go unless Simon checks in here and sends you his files.

Yes, thanks, guys. Both John and Dave got back to me. I think I have all I need for now!
(except my DD box, which I'm finding out must have been lost by the USPS.)

...as it is, I'm sittng NEXT to my copy of BoW, and working on an option of randomly generating personality types to implement DISC behavioral profiles to PC generation and role-play. It may be of much use to m professionally, but we'll also see how it fares on the game table....
ADHD, is a wonderful distraction!

Wow I picked up Book of War and played my first game with my daughter today. I love this game! I would love to see more units available. Is there a forum for BoW discussion? I have a few rules questions also...

I have a few rules questions also... Yes, we've had fun too! In fact, I plan to create my own Delving Deeper character sheets with a small area to put Chainmail and BoW stats. I haven't looked for or found a forum yet, but I have emailed the author, and haven't heard from him yet. Perhaps, at least a sub-forum is in order here!

I have a copy of Book of War, too. I've yet to have an opportunity to play it but I'm really impressed by the simplicity. It's similar to an approach I've taken with my own campaign in the past, but where I've relied upon my "gut feeling" the author has taken his knowledge of mathematics and really hammered it out.
There was a discussion thread over at K&KA regarding miniature rules for OSRIC, does anyone know if Matthew (as he goes there and here) has seen this rules set?

I don't want to hijack this thread to talk in depth about Book of War. But there does not seem to be an appropriate sub-forum. Genaral, Chainmail and Simulacra seem like the least offensive choices. Opinions?

I'm thinking the Mighty Marv Finarvin would be the best picker. :-) But, talking in depth about BoW in this thread wouldn't be inappropriate. Perhaps, we could rename the thread "Mass Combat options for Delving Deeper" or something. ;-P
[modified to say.... topic renamed!]

Cool. Something strange came up in the game the other day.
To begin, Lets call the first player's forces the Red Army and the second player's forces the Blue Army 1) Unit A (Red) has engaged unit B (Blue). 2) on the second turn of melee the Red Army wins initiative, unit A uses a full move to expand 3 ranks per side and wrap unit B. (I think whichever unit's force has the initiative has the option to wrap.) 3) on the third turn of melee unit B fails morale and routes. 4) on the fourth turn, unit B uses a full move to do an about face, preparing to flee. 4a) also in the fourth turn unit C (Blue Army) charges into the left wrapping arm of unit A. 4b) ok, unit A clearly has +1 vs unit B since B has done an about face to flee from melee with unit A. I also granted C a +1 bonus versus A since it has struck the back of A's wrapping arm.
So here are my questions: 1) As I interpret the rules, the ONLY formation changes which are valid in melee are expanding/wrapping and routed units (ONLY) are permitted to change facing/withdrawl. Is this correct? 2) I assume the routed unit who has turned it's back on the enemy may still fight, but @ -1 to hit (for being routed) while the enemy gains +1 to hit for attacking the back. Correct? 3) re-reading the rules on formations, I realize the about-face only a half move. Here is my quandary: If unit A ~looses~ initiative, unit B must move first, therefore unit A may follow otherwise unit A may not. It seems to me that unit A should have the option to follow a routed foe. Also on the turn B does and about face, does it still move it's full movement or only half. The wording isn't clear to me. 4) Can a unit in a hedgehog formation Wrap and if so, does it loose the benefits of that formation?

Converting some Monsters to BoW so I can use some more of my minis. The costs are very much guesswork to me. I have no idea if they are very accurate. Unit | Cost | MV | AH | HD | Notes | Giants (Stone) | 65 | 12 | 6 | 9 | throw Stones, 3 damage | Lizard Men | 9 | 6 | 5 | 2 | 2 attacks | Satyr | 22 | 18 | 5 | 5 | Cause Fear, Shortbows | Wight | 14 | 12 | 5 | 4 | Fearless, 2 damage, -1 in sun | Wolf | 7 | 18 | 4 | 2 | Dire Wolf | 11 | 18 | 5 | 3 | Warg | 16 | 18 | 5 | 4 | Winter Wolf | 20 | 18 | 5 | 6 | Wraith | 18 | 12 | 5 | 5 | Fearless, 2 damage, -1 in sun | Wyvern | 35 | 24 | 6 | 7 | flying, deadly, 2 attacks, 2 damage |
Deadly On hits against mass creatures, check 1d6 ≥ HD/2 to convert any hit to a full figure kill. Against 1HD heroes, attacks roll 3 dice; against HD2+ heroes, attack rolls are as normal, but any such hit is a hero-kill. Elf targets are immune to this effect Satyrs during the morale phase the satyr may attempt to cause fear in a unit which is within 6". Each unit my be attacked once per game in this manner. The effected unit makes a morale chaeck as if it has lost a figure or makes it's morale check at -1 if already forced to do so.
