I could have sworn I read something similar a while back but I'm not sure if it was here, DF or a blog. Sorry if this is covered elsewhere but:
I am thinking of giving level 1 M-Us a wand that can be charged with a single (1) Level 1 spell.
It would take all night to charge, would have to be a spell the MU knows and they couldn't memorize anything else that night. Basically it gives 2 spells on the outset of the adventure.
It seems ok to me but could that be problematic later on?

As always, it depends upon the campaign, but after thinking over for a minute or two? It seems a good idea that won't mess up a game but I've only considered the idea for a few minutes.

Seems reasonable, in that it is basically a 1 level spell storing device.
The real problem is making it limited or unique. Otherwise you get wizards carrying 12 of these things, and really becoming overpowered.....
Perhaps each wizard has 1 such item, but others are not able to use it. That is, consider the "Wand" [or whatever form it takes] as a piece of idiosyncratic magic formed during the Wizard training.
Perhaps even during the early years of training the "Wand" was the only way a young wizard could cast a spell. It is not until they are able to cast with out their focus tool that they "graduate" to 1st level?

Start your MU with 1d4 scrolls?

Thanks guys. The scrolls is a pretty good alternative but I really like the flavor of the personalized apprentice wand. Reminds me of Jedi making their own lightsaber type of thing.

The nice thing is that the wizard gets the extra spell at the start of the adventure, but if used may not have an opportunity to recharge the wand until after the adventure is over. (Eight hours to recharge the wand or eight hours to refresh his spells. No time for both unless they reach a safe haven spot like Rivendell.)
That keeps some of the power creep out of the game but gives more options to the low-level MU.
