I've been going through the PDFs carefully to look at intentional rule differences, and I noticed something about the DD Thief class. Thief abilities all succeed on a 3+ (1d6 roll,) which is simple to remember and better than most of the standard Thief abillities... but unless I'm missing something, they never improve. Thieves do *add* abilities (decipher maps at 3rd level, read magic scrolls at 9th,) and their surprise attack damage improves, but not the standard Thief abilities.
Was this intentional?
I think I will be using the DD Thief class, but with a tweak: the Thief gets a +1 bonus on any use of thief skills if the level/HD of an opponent monster or character is less than half the Thief's level, Thus, if a 7th-level Thief tries to pick the pockets of a nobleman equivalent to 3rd level, there's a slightly better chance of success. I'd even rate traps and locks based on dungeon level and give a bonus there, as well. It seems like a low enough bonus to keep things from getting out of control, but it gives a slight feeling of advancement.

Quite good house rule, although reaching 2nd level would mean a huge jump in the efficiency of the thief, if your world's population is mostly made of 0-1 HD creatures and NPCs.

Agreed, nice tweak!
As for the 0-level NPCs: (1) some dungeon-focused campaigns (such as what I am currently running) have only administrative surface activities (i.e. hiring henchmen, paying taxes, selling loot and identifying magic items); (2) 0-level NPCs have little loot to offer, if one wants to pick their pockets so much, then let him do so.

Yes, this was intentional. The thief works as it is without introducing anything more complicated than what is already in the original (e.g., breaking down doors, finding secret doors and so on), and -- more importantly -- it encourages house ruling. I'm greatly pleased to hear that folks are already house ruling it. That means we got something right

Crap, I had no intention to house rule it. I'm doing something wrong it seems.

You'll just have to house-rule something else to make up for that.

Yeah, I have a few classes and races, but right now my thesis enjoys higher priority.

Until recently (arrow in the neck) our thief was doing brilliantly; the 3+ success rate is excellent since it gives a considerable chance of success (competent PC = happy player) and a real risk of failure. I won't be modding. Just need a new thief.

The Thief's player was VERY unhappy. I still haven't been forgiven.
