So, no tower/stronghold/guild building info for magic-users and thieves of high level? Interesting. I like how short the class descriptions are by the way. I'm thinking about rewriting the various sub-classes for DD, but I suppose you already have plans for publishing a supplement with stuff like these.

Within that era, MUs and thieves didn't have strongholds. In fact, that era didn't have thieves as player-characters! As for the sub-classes, DD is really easy to tack extra stuff onto. If you feel your work is worthy? Write it up and post it here, or contact John about getting it published!

Funny, but until you mentioned I didn't notice that magic-users had no towers or strongholds in WhiteBox! Maybe AD&D and other retroclones spoiled me. However while the era didn't have thieves as PCs, Delving Deeper does, so that's no excuse. Just kidding. As for the sub-classes, DD is really easy to tack extra stuff onto. If you feel your work is worthy? Write it up and post it here, or contact John about getting it published! I will see what I can do. My campaign needs paladins, rangers, samurai, ninjas, monks and druids. I was thinking a lot about creating a "Supplement I druid".

I know your remark was meant in jest, but just in case anyone else has a similar question, I'd like to offer the following. We tried, from the very beginning, to stick to our mandate of the truest emulation we could reasonably produce. It was difficult, to say the least. In point of fact my co-author, Simon (WaysoftheEarth), had some really good ideas that would have made great additions to the game. We considered many ways to present alternative material, but in the end decided the books should remain true to what we originally wanted. The case of the thief was the toughest choice, and in my estimation our greatest departure from our basic syllabus. Even then, we took great pains to label the class as optional. At any rate, we at BHP appreciate your feedback. Keep it coming!

I like that the thief is competant from the start with his skills. Instead of "Oh look I have a 10% chance to move silently I'm ready to go!"

Thanks! Simon wrote that part but, if memory serves, we based that upon a version of the thief even earlier than that which was published.

I really like how the thief uses an already existing sub-system instead of a seperate one. I was thinking a lot about something similar a year ago, but I would've used d% for some checks (disarming traps, sleight of hands, etc.) and ability score plus racial plus class bonuses. I was under the influence of NetHack and Angband around that time.

Haven't seen the final results yet, so it will be interesting to see which of my layout edits Simon kept in and which didn't make the cut.
From an editor's point of view, the part of the ODD books I have the most trouble with is the monster section. I understand where they were trying to go with their grouping of monsters, but I don't think it was the best method of organization, as it stands. One possible improvement might have been to more clearly delineate the groupings with proper sub-category titles, like, "Undead", "Elemental", "Giant-Types", etc.
Or maybe group them by region.
But, either way, you always end up with a lot of monsters in the "Other" category and it detracts from the overall effect you are trying to achieve.
It might be better to just go with an alphabetical order and throw in a few tables for regional locations.

I like it so far. I hope we're going to get some cool supplements after it's out. I don't know how "cool" they are, but I will be re-issuing my winning one page dungeons with DD statistics, as well as a few articles I've written for Fight On with DD statistics. My next "big project" is to write up my Hinterlands campaign setting (as seen in the online games section of these boards) for DD. Others are most welcome to put out supplementary material as well, seeing as it's all OGL, and I will be hosting a website where I'll maintain a list of online DD resources. I know that John has got three pre-existing adventures "translated" into DD stats, all ready to go. I believe Cameron has a couple of things in the pipe that I'd love to see too, including a document containing many of EGG's house rules from the early days The future looks bright for DD!

It might be better to just go with an alphabetical order and throw in a few tables for regional locations. Ehiker did a super job of proof reading DD in the final weeks (thanks Ehiker!) but even before that I had given a lot of thought to how the monsters should be arranged. In the end, I decided to stick with something that emulates the original organisation in M&T. Not just because it is more authentic, but also because it is genuinely useful to the referee that way. Related monsters appear together (or nearby) in the book, rather than being scattered about the book in alphabetical order. All the man-types are together. All the giant-types are together. All the aberrations are together, and so on. It is unusual, but it works. There are also some "regional" tables of randomly occurring monsters in Vol 2. E.g., there are various wilderness, sea-faring, and airborne tables in addition to the usual dungeon level tables.

Thanks, WOTE! I enjoyed it!
I would have liked it, regardless, but throwing in a short deadline added a nice challenge to the mix. Nothing like a good challenge to keep you on your toes.

I'm looking at the Vols 1 & 2 "No Art" PDF's and I'm so delighted I may not sleep! This is EXACTLY what I was hoping for as far as "ease-of-use" for new players, and nostalgic "been-here-before" for us old-timers. I'm hoping to have a number of "one page" type dungeons/scenarios that I'll post in the spirit and inspiration of Dyson Logos all with DD statistics. I can't wait to run a few demo games at a local FLGS!

Hmm, I just started two campaigns on my sandbox setting Xarn - so far I'm working with a city and dungeon map (Ysbrough) and the 26*17 hexmap of a region. I was planning to share these in english (so far I'm only blogging about it in hungarian), maybe DD would be a good base for that.

I also have to say that I appreciate that the no-art PDF's actually are reformatted without the art instead of just having blank pages and blank sections within the text to wrap around.
Also, I really like how many of the sections are divided up with headings often on their own page(s). It makes referencing so much easier and will make table handouts, etc a breeze.
Cheers!
