Hey everyone. There has been some interest in the campaign setting created by me and my friends (Setting details here odd74.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=workshop&action=display&thread=7574) for our games. Here, I'd like to give a report of the first adventure in the science-fantasy world of Garn.
Only two of the expected players were able to make it to the first session (poor scheduling on my part) so we decided to temporarily forgo the campaign I had written up in favor of some good old fashioned sandbox adventure.
I had some maps drawn out and some enemies statted but the rest was mostly improv. I think it turned out fairly well for what is was.
The Characters
Aquillos the Chromaidee Scholar.
&
Tetra the Oni Warrior.
The Setup
Our protagonists meet each other in the Golden Dragon Wonton Shop in the subterranean settlement of Belltower; named because the main gate is located beneath the crumbling ruins of a great bell tower, constructed by some long forgotten civilization in the ancient past. Tetra the Oni has lived in constant boredom in Belltower all his life, and Aquillos, a studious traveler, is simply stopping in for a meal so that he may continue his wanderings on a full stomach.
They begin to chat, and quickly became friends. Both having a great wanderlust and desire to adventure, they began hunting for rumors of treasure, monsters, and other such exotic things.
From the population of Belltower, the twain quickly learned that the issue at the forefront of it's mind is the threat of a tribe of Sailbacks, massive barbaric dimetrodon-men who have been expanding their territory closer to Belltower for the last week. They also learned that there is a bounty of 50 emeralds on the head of the Sailback Chieftain. Seeing this as the opportunity that they were looking for, Tetra and Aquillos spent their last remaining cash on some weapons (a spear and knives for Aquillos, and a ray-gun for Tetra), several days rations, and set out.
Day One
Aquillos and Tetra spent their first day of adventure traveling east towards the Sailback territory. The was uneventful until close to dusk when the characters spotted a trail of smoke rising from behind a rocky hill. They both cautiously approached and saw that the smoke was coming from a massive funeral pyre. Three wounded and armed men were throwing bodies on the fire. The players didn't see the three men as a threat so they called out to them. The men were frightened and drew their weapons (two scimitars and a flail), though upon seeing the characters they looked relieved. Their leader, wearing a large bejeweled nose ring, shouldered his flail and spoke "praise be to Ummi that you are not those monsters". A tense conversation ensued in which the men revealed to the characters that their party was ambushed by Sailbacks and that they were the only survivors. The men also claimed that they were merchants but the characters saw through their bluff, realizing that they were in fact bandits.
Having no tolerance for bandits Aquillos hurled his spear, skewering one of the men through the throat and slaying him outright. Tetra had no choice but to defend himself as a furious melee ensued; a few knife strokes and ray-gun pulses later the characters came out victorious. Initially Tetra was angry that Aquillos had began combat without consulting him but his attitude changed completely when he remembered the bandit leaders glorious nosering, a prize that was well worth their risky actions.
The characters moved a good distance away from the pyre and stretched out under an overhanging rock formation, ate some of their hard tack rations, and went to sleep.
Day Two
After waking the next morning, Aquillos and Tetra decided to head back to Belltower to sell their newly won nosering so they could purchase some better gear and perhaps some armor to better combat the sailbacks (they wouldn't want to end up like the bandits, would they?).
They did.
After some bartering the characters received quite a sizable amount of money for the nosering, with which they used to purchase two suits of crocodile leather armor, and to get two of Aquillos' long knives outfitted with electric arc generators by the Wired Wizard, a flamboyant local electronics salesman.
They both ate at the wonton shop and went to Tetra's cave home in the very lowest levels of Belltower, where they sharpened their blades, polished their new armor, and prepared for their upcoming assault on the Sailbacks.
And thus ends the first session. Thanks for reading.
