So, what fantasy films have really hit the mark for you? The sky is the limit, if it is even vaguely fantasy (The 13th Warrior, for example) you can include it here.
Here is a partial list of my favorites:
Ladyhawke (1985) I especially liked Mouse picking the lock with his stiletto, and the very D&Dish Anti-Cleric.
Krull (1983) A typical D&D adventuring party, complete with expendable men-at-arms.
LotR: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) A got a feeling very much like the one I had when I first read Tolkien's masterpiece. Although I feel the theatre of the mind has it all over movies, this film really breathed life into the setting.
Big Trouble in Little China (1986) I loved the meddling demi-gods and the magic fight between Egg Shen and David Lo Pan.

Oh, and ...
The Raven (1963) A great movie in just about every way. I particularly liked the magic duel between Craven and Scarabus.

Excalibur, Dragonslayer and Beastmaster were ones I really enjoyed. I also have a soft spot for Willow and Legend.

The only fantasy films which give me great pleasure every time I watch them are,
Bakshi's Lord of the Rings The Wizard of Oz
I find the following films intriguing and wonderful in different measures
The Masque of the Red Death - R. Corman - 1964 Fire and Ice - Bakshi - 1983 Wizards - Bakshi - 1977 Cat People - J. Tourneur - 1942 I Walked with a Zombie - J. Tourneur - 1943
If allowed I would include, The Night of the Hunter, in the first category as it is a fairy tale told from a child's perspective but that might be stretching the definition a bit.

Lots of great stuff already mentioned, so I'll avoid the repeats and add to that-
The Fabulous World of Jules Verne (1958)
Captain Sinbad (1963)
The 7 Faces of Dr. Lao (1964)
Time Bandits (1981)
The Sword & the Sorcerer (1982)

That's a nice list although I have to say I won't watch the Bakshi stuff anymore. Actually I pass on a lot of adult animation these days as it has a strange effect on me. I have nightmares after watching it and my mood goes completely dark. Something about it acts as a trigger and so I tend to avoid it.

I enjoy many of those, with significant exceptions (Krull) and probably would rank Excalibur and Masque of the Red Death higher than the others. Stuff I'd add:
7th Voyage of Sinbad Hawk the Slayer The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes

Ha! Cross-posted Hawk the Slayer with thorswulf.
I'd also add The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) with Errol Flynn

I would add to these excellent lists a few inspirational Japanese movies:
Kwaidan Jigoku The Great Yokai War 100 Yokai Monsters Sakuya: Slayer of Demons And there is one title I cannot remember about a warrior that is helping this town fight off kappa and spider women and ultimately these bandits with cannons and guns.
I also really love The Raven, as cheesy as it is, that wizard duel is nice.

Here's an obscure one I have on DVD: The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) "the oldest surviving animated feature film ... features a silhouette animation technique Reiniger had invented which involved manipulated cutouts made from cardboard and thin sheets of lead under a camera. ... The original prints featured color tinting ... The story is based on elements taken from the collection 1001 Arabian Nights, specifically The Story of Prince Ahmed and the Fairy Paribanou featured in Andrew Lang's The Blue Fairy Book. With the assistance of Aladdin, the Witch of the Fiery Mountain, and a magic horse, the title character reclaims the magic lamp and conquers the African sorcerer." The silhouette animation technique is fantastic and unlike anything I've seen elsewhere.

Top of my list would probably have to be Valhalla Rising, not everybody's cup of tea I know. A band of amoral adventurers out on a wilderness adventure. Warning: if you haven't seen it this movie is not an action flick (despite the depiction in the link), but an art-house film. My favourite older fantasy film is Legend, despite a strong dislike of Tom Cruise. The cinematography is wonderful and Tim Curry in the role of the demon is something I've never seen anyone come anywhere close to topping - and done without CGI. The movie I feel comes closest to depicting a D&D game for me is Conan the Destroyer, crap movie but boy does it cry "D&D" - a couple of fighters, a thief, a magic-user off on a raid to an evil wizard's castle.

My single favorite fantasy movie is Ray Harryhausen's Jason and the Argonauts.

That last shadow puppet shot is strongly reminiscent of a scene in the last season of Buffy which featured shadow casters in the story.

That looks outstanding to me. I have a copy on the way. I wonder if that is where Bakshi got his idea for how to present the history of the ring at the beginning of his LotR.

So, what fantasy films have really hit the mark for you? The sky is the limit, if it is even vaguely fantasy [...] For me, nothing tops the short film/music video for Muse's Knights Of Cydonia; it's got everything: - Post-apocalyptic, dystopian future (copyright is 2081)
- Spaghetti western cowboy pro- and an-tagonists
- Kung-fu (snake style, tiger style, flying eagle style, ...)
- Heavy-Metal(ish), metal-clad maiden astride a unicorn (played by the bountifully beautiful Cassandra Bell)
- Robot, rayguns and Star-Wars(-like) holograms
- cryptic, coded numerological messages
- Cydonia: ancient city-state (Κυδωνία) on the northwest coast of Crete, founded by King Cydon, a son of Hermes and of Akakallis, the daughter of King Minos; or the flat-topped mesa in the Martian northern hemisphere?
...all jammed into just 6 minutes and 6 seconds.

The silhouette animation technique is fantastic and unlike anything I've seen elsewhere. Reminds me of how they portrayed the legend of the Deathly Hallows in the last Harry Potter movie. I thought that was pretty cool. Lot's of great suggestions here. I guess I can't come up with anything to add.

Gary loved The Raven.
I also HIGHLY recommend a number of "Costume Dramas" from the 30s through the 50s
Errol Flynn's "Robin Hood", which was Gary's example of what D&D combat was "Prince Valiant" "The Vikings" "The Warlord" "Black Shield of Falworth" "Knights of the Round Table" (a real gem in my estimation) "The Warrior" "Genghis Khan" "The Talisman" -- a REAL gem!

I guess for weird occult scariness,
As mentioned but one of those late night movies I happen to turn on as a teenager not knowing what it was that I was getting into,"The Raven" with Vincent Price, Peter Lorre and Boris Karloff as dueling sorcerers. Funny that a very young Jack Nicholson was also in this movie.
I didn't know at the time Vincent Price's many other movies, as mentioned "The Masque of the Red Death" and "The Witchhunter General" etc. Thanks goodness, saved me some nightmares!
Another scary occult Elizabethan horror movie that I don't recommend is "Blood on Satan's Claw." someone has been perverse enough to post the whole film on youtube if you have to view. It would have aired on TV in the early 70s.

The early 1970s TV movie "Gargoyles" is also a must-see.

It would have aired on TV in the early 70s. I don't recall much of the movie, so I can't comment on its quality. But I remember a scene where one character is alone in a house and can hear the Devil climbing the stairs. I based a D&D monster on that (write-up on my blog, under the "wandering" label.)
