I'm too poor (and cheap) to invest in metal (or plastic) miniatures for use in mass combat (Chainmail, AD&D Battle System) or adventuring in the dungeon, wilderness, town or castle. I also lack the time and talent to craft my own alternatives. I'm looking for free alternatives on the web.
In addition to paper miniatures for representing PCs and NPCs, I'm also interested in:
Something I could print-out and cut-out without too much hassle would be ideal. But something slightly more involved, e.g., making a wizard's tower with paper towel tubes, is OK too.
While the emphasis should be on medieval fantasy, I also throw the occasional
I'm interested in learning from your personal experiences using paper minis and models in your game. Does it add to the gaming experience and make it more exciting? Or is it effort wasted?
If you have any photos of paper minis or models you use in your game, it would be great if you could share them here.

- cardboard counters (à la Battle System 1e, which came with 801 die-cut counters)
- paper models representing terrain
