The best part was I had a sneaking feeling it was a Gelatinous Cube. I'd been playing Houngli with his very low wisdom score to the hilt. I had hoped that the party winning init might have saved me from certain death on the final round of digestion.
HAHAHA. I really enjoyed that encounter. I could picture Houngli getting swallowed whole with a big dumb look in his face.
Awesome.

I really liked my Avatar for Nick.
I guess we're going to have to go back to the "hit and run," "in & out" dungeon crawl style. One fight, back out, heal up. Repeat.
It's always our second or third fight that kills us.
(Of course, this was on the second level of the dungeon, and that's partially my fault. Sorry.)

I sort of disagree with you - you can fight multiple combats per adventure with good tactics and control of the combat environment. In my opinion, there were two huge mistakes. You forgot the mission focus (clear the werespiders) and you went down to second level of the dungeon unprepared (still first level, no spells, no magic items). The other (debatable) mistakes were letting the party split up, leaving an enemy at your backs, and not immediately trying to find an escape to the surface once you were possibly cut off. But as long as you had fun ...

Yeah, lots of mistakes were made, but I always felt like were playing the roles of our characters well. I have to admit I like pushing it a bit and seeing if the party can pull it out and survive, those are usually the best times.
I'll play a little safer next go-round. I just don't want to get to the point where we are stopping each room, searching each area for traps and generally crawling through at a snail's pace. Especially in PBP, it's a slow enough medium as it is.

Rumigard staggers, hit not once, not twice, but three times, yet somehow keeps his feet. Poor Zsolt is not so lucky, as he collapses with two spears sticking out his breast. Ronkul takes a shot in the head and is seriously wounded, but not out of the fight. Is this your idea of going easy on us this time ;D? Heehee!!

I apologize for all the carnage. What I basically do is set up and adventure with some basic tactical plans for all the encounter groups, based on their intelligence, habits and what they would be likely to know. Then I just run with them and if the party does some clever stuff the monsters get pwned

Yeah mako I love the way you're running this game; the significant risk of death is part of the fun, and dying isn't so bad (for me anyway) since it's just a play-by-post game, so it's not a big deal if I have to go back to lurking on here =)
BTW, what's your policy on rolling up a new character? I'm totally fine if you only do it on a case-by-case basis and don't want me to or whatever, just thought I'd ask.

Would it help us to have a caller to help move things along?
I would nominate Wulfgar/Emilio or Kipper/Vanna (though Kipper/Vanna isn't a good choice for a few days).

Having a caller would still require people to tell the caller what they want to do. So instead of posting, they would pm the caller, and he'd post their action? That just seems like more work for no gain. Unless of course the caller was deciding what everyone else was doing- but that's not a caller's role from anything I'm familiar with, and not something I'd like to do.

I'm just thinking we need to do something to move things along when people are slow to respond. I think we're still awaiting responses on the plan to take watch all night...
One thing that would help is for people to try and look to the future in posting their actions. I have tried to do this some, but I'm sure I could still do better.
Another angle would be some response time after someone proposes a plan, and if someone doesn't respond in that time, the plan is assumed to go forward. Exceptions can be made where appropriate (for example, waiting longer for someone to respond when their character is volunteered to lead the way down a trap filled corridor :-).

In retrospect, I think leaving the city was a bad idea - people had enthusiasm for it, so they posted. After this encounter, I plan to ship the party off to Verbosh, ready to become spider fodder.

Sorry to intrude, but on the subject of caller...
I'm currently the caller in the Holmes game over on Dragonsfoot.
I pretty much just make unimportant decisions for players who miss posting for a day or so. That way we can get on with the game.
Also, when the party is sitting around trying to decide where to turn next, I'm the guy who listens to everyone and then "officially" tells the DM which way the party turns.
So far it's been pretty smooth and no one is annoyed by it.

Random, thanks for your thoughts. Those line up with what my thoughts on what a "caller" could provide.
Makofan: I'm not sure it's the locale, part of the issue is we are now in high-summer mode, so people are taking vacations, and perhaps even if they aren't off on vacation, are being out doors etc. more rather than hanging out at the computer all day.

Part of it is the locale. You come upon a burned out house doesn't seem like each person needs to speak up, so much as the sewers did.

Hmm, can we get the "post your characters here" thread made sticky?
Also, a suggestion, create a new thread when necessary "graveyard", when your character dies, move (cut & paste) your character sheet to the graveyard, modify your sheet in the "post your characters here" thread to just have your characters name and cause of death or some such.
That will make it easy to take in at a glance all the active PCs.

I would like to suggest we use Brian Murphy's "Shields Shall Be Splintered" from Fight On! #2. It is a simple and elegant ruling which might help lessen PC death for front-line characters and the dreaded TPK.
What does the esteemed Referee say?

As I have no credit or money at the moment, I have not got a copy of FO#2. Can you summarize the idea for me?
Also, sorry about the no posting lately - we had 12% of our workforce laid off on Friday, a long weekend, kids starting school, and month end. And I am the IT manager ... I've been busy
