Really terrific! Thanks for doing this ways.
couple questions, why # appearing followed by a min and max column? same info. Also why 2 identical "in lair" columns?
Note - for the Killer frogs, the # app I gave was the min and max listed in the TotF module since no # app stat was given <shrug>. Also the "fight at double values" in Arneson speak means HD doubled (raising 1/2 HD to 1 which actually makes no difference on the attack matrix in this case), HP doubled (3 becomes 6), and saving throws would get a +2. I've always wondered if it meant damage should be doubled (tripled, quadrupled etc.) also, but since damage is never mentioned in this context I suppose it remains the same. What it boils down to is that the creature is much more likely to hit opponenets and can take twice the damage or, put another way recieves only 1/2 damage and gets a +2 to hit - not sure about the math for the +2 though.

Oops, those were some extra columns where I tried to do some extra text formatting. I've removed them and updated the download.
The phrase "fight at double value" and even "fight at triple value" appears for a few other monsters too. I would simply allow the monster two or three attacks per round instead of one. But I agree, it is open to interpretation.

I like this list a lot, but I am going to have to fiddle with it considerably to get it into a format that is fits on standard paper and is still readable.
Unfortunately I can't read this even with my reading glasses due to the small size. That is not meant as a criticism, my eyesight is not your problem.
The great thing about you putting it into an Excell file is that I am add the missing creatures, such as, all of the Barsoom critters very easily.
Have an Exalt!!

I'm glad you bumped this. I forgot I had more. There's actually a lot of monsters not statted elsewhere in D&D that get some stats and info in either Supplement II ToTF or the FFC dungeon of Castle Blackmoor. Particularly with ToTF it's surprising since the names are familiar "giant lizard, giant snake" and it's not until you start digging for the stats that you realize there weren't any until the MM was published. I've attached a doc that has most of them. In a couple cases (Giant Snake) I included stats from both sources. I didn't include the non-standard (pre-D&D and Sniders stuff) monsters from the FFC except in the case of adding some detail to the True Troll. True troll is a CHAINMAIL monster but it shows up in Temple of the Frog (The trolls who fight as hill giants). I didn't list the other ToTF trolls (the ones who fight like ogres) because that's prolly to confusing with the standard D&D troll. I've referenced the buggers incase WoTE (or anybody else) wants to add them to the list or check them out. Attachments:

Falconer; There are no monster stats given for "Hobbits" in GH that I can see, nor for Magic Statues in M&T. I don't have Tegel Manor or the Ready Ref Sheets, but if you want to provide the stats line and the reference I'll add them (since they are mentioned in M&T). Falconer; I don't have Lost Caverns of Tsojconth either. Can you provide details (including source) for the three critters you mentioned? Note to self: I apparently never followed up on these.

That's a very nice compilation of OD&D monsters. I love how OD&D fits a bevy monsters on a single page with short, precise notes, rather than most modern systems that use a minimum of one page for each monster. So elegant, in my opinion.
One, potentially unrelated, question: Where did the HD+X thing come from? I understand how it works, but how did it arise and why? If a monster already has 6 HD, +1 HP isn't going to make that much difference, so why the extra notation? Does it go back to Chainmail or something like that? Thanks.

That +1 may also change their column in the attack matrix, their saving throws, plus it's added to their first attack according to MnT's troll example.

Okay, so it works kind of like PC hit dice then, meaning the monster is higher "level" but they don't necessarily get a full additional hit dice for it. Thank you.

Okay, finally got a chance to study this great document. Help out my ignorance, I still can't decypher:
GPoD EGG
And is the "A" in "M&TA" for "Carnivorous Ape" a typo for just "M&T"?
Thanks for the help!

GPoD is for Garbage Pits of Despair, EGG is for Ernst Gary Gygax, M&TA is Monster & Treasure Assortment.

Great, thanks. And it is nice to learn about GPoD and M&TA.
In what form, then was EGG's monster published? How did we get a "personal monster" from the EGG?

Hey, Ways! I've been going over the data in your spreadsheet in great detail. Actually, I'm making my own LBB "Monster Manual" for my own use. (I.e., what would the Monster Manual have looked like if it would have been produced in that format during the LBB and/or Supplement era?) I'm down in the "E"s right now and I have a few questions . . . Where did you get the movement data for the Platinum and Chromatic Dragons? They seem reasonable, but I've looked and looked and cannot find where the source might be. The hit dice for the Air, Earth, Fire, & Water Elementals are all listed as "8, 12, 16", but your spreadsheet goes to "8, 12, 17" for the Earth Elemental and "8, 12, and 18" for both the Fire and Water Elementals. Can you tell me where this came from? Other than that I'm having a lot of fun "converting" the monsters . . . Thanks for your work on the spreadsheet. Gonyaulax

Hi gonyaulax, glad you like it. It's been a very long while since I looked at it so I'd have to look into the platinum and chromatic dragons again. The elemental hit dice issue is probably an error introduced by the spreadsheet automatically "filling down" and assuming it should add/remove 1 from 16.

I don't know if this is really the right spot to ask this or not, but I think it's the best option, seeing as all of the OD&D monsters are listed here.
I'm working on running a OD&D campaign using Chainmail Combat, and I'm running into the issue of determining Troop Types for combat. I would normally classify quite a few monsters as Horse Types, though I feel that that makes them quite powerful. Take a Centaur for example, I would say that he attacks as a Light Horse (I usually give Centaurs a Long Bow and a Dagger), but he defends as Medium Horse due to his AC of 6. This leads to the issue of my non mounted characters being underpowered against what I would normally consider a lower difficulty 4 HD monster. Any suggestions?
Oh and sorry if this isn't a good place to ask this...

I'm working on running a OD&D campaign using Chainmail Combat, and I'm running into the issue of determining Troop Types for combat. This topic might be better in the Chainmail sub-forum, but while we're here... Are you using CM's 1:1 rules (MtM and the FCT)? Or are you using CM's 1:20 rules (mass combat)? The latter option (mass combat rules) might be a bit tricky, as these rules only cover normal combat (no fantasy/heroic creatures). I think this is the issue you've already run into. The former (MtM+FCT) should be relatively straight forward: this is pretty much how U&WA suggests we run OD&D combat--with the option of substituting the Alternative attack matrices, if desired, for hit resolution. If going down the MtM+FCT route then you could treat a centaur as a mounted man in normal combat (against normal men), or as a lycanthrope on the FCT in heroic/fantastic combat (against heroes or monsters). Remembering that MtM/FCT "kills" count only as "hits" in OD&D.

It's mainly attempting to determine troop types in the 1:20 mass combat rules. I just am not entirely sure as to where to draw the line with Foot vs. Horse determination. Another example, basilisks I would have defend as a heavy horse. That leads me to want to have it attack as a heavy horse also. Though to me that would make the basilisk much stronger than it would be in any of the other systems.
