You just have to love Barsoom! Also I wonder what would have happened if Arneson and Hargrave had gotten together after TSR rebuffed Hargrave. You have to wonder. Hargrave and Arneson were both known for pushing the envelope, fantasy-wise. Remember the Egg of Coot? I have often heard that this creature was E. Gary Gygax (E.G.G.) in disguise.

Nah. I don't buy it and never did. Gygax fits the mold far better than that story.

Nah. I don't buy it and never did. Gygax fits the mold far better than that story. Um, I was a kid, but I was indeed *there*. I discovered that the Egg of Coot was Greg, and later had it confirmed by Gronan and others. I grew up in the Twin Cities, started playing wargames when I was seven and then role-playing games when I was twelve. I was part of the "kid set" that got into miniatures, wargames, and role-playing -- mostly tolerated, sometimes encouraged, occasionally the butt of ridicule. It was all worth it.

Like I said, I don't buy it. My understanding is all hearsay, but so is the story you are referring to. Gygax personality is well-parodied by the Egg of Coot, as is his name. I have heard (again, who really knows?) that the story that this referred to some other guy in the group was tacked on later as a sort of half-truth apology when it looked like Gygax and Arneson might kiss and make up. If you know otherwise, fine, but I'm not convinced, whether or not you were a member of the group.

0_o Let me get this straight. You have written comments by both Dave and Gary on the internet and in print that "Egg of Coot" was, indeed, not Gary. You now have a corroborating statement by someone who was actually there. And, in the face of all evidence to the contrary, you are still going to stick with the version of the story you like better? Man! You are one tough sell! Keep in mind I don't have a stake in which particular theory you endorse, but WOW.

Victor was there, and so was I, and I've known, and worked for, ALL the people involved, and talked to them all about it. You need to do a lot more listening and a lot less talking. For somebody who was NOT there, you sure are certain you know better than people who were.

That philosophy has worked for me.

Well, you're great accomplishment in life may be that you played D&D with Gygax, but that doesn't give you the right to cuss me out. I can have my own opinion, and it is one that is shared by others. This gets reported to the mods.

For somebody who was NOT there, you sure are certain you know better than people who were. There's also the simple fact of timing. Egg of Coot was first mentioned in the Domesday newsletter in 1972 in reference to the Black Moor game; prior to any version of D&D being written, let alone put in print. Gary and Dave were certainly on very good terms then, having just cowritten DGUTS. Gary also mentioned the EGG of Coot in his introduction to OD&D. Its also plain obvious that early Blackmoor names were typically a persons real name or a play on them. Mi-Karr = Mike Carr, for example, just as grEGG sCOTt = Egg of Coot.

(in addition to a number of other people who had firsthand knowledge and have said exactly the same thing.) Really, its pretty reasonable to predict that propagating a potentially defamatory rumor, in the face of contrary evidence, and for the sake of an ill informed opinion is liable to get you certain labels.

Between this and trying to start an “edition war” between Holmes and OD&D (what a joke!), you’re starting to look like quite the troll, gloriousbattle.

I can have my own opinion, and it is one that is shared by others. Oopie doopie. When you claim your "opinion" is more valid that multiple assertions of what others, with better grounds, claim as "facts," be prepared to be taken as seriously as those who claim that cutting taxes on the rich creates jobs. This gets reported to the mods. Knock yourself out, Sparky.

Okay, I think we've beat this dead horse enough. I pulled all of the "Egg of Coot" posts from the other thread and dumped them here. We've evolved from pleasant discussion into name-calling and cussing. That's no fun for any of us. Let's all play nice. Thread locked, at least for the moment. Maybe I'll open it later when cooler heads prevail...
