Yeah, I have been really inspired by Jeff's ideas (and the general Star Wars vibe going through various blogs lately.)
In fact, I just wrote up a bunch of big random tables for character traits and the like (for the WEG Star Wars game, though I suppose they could be used for any SW RPG you want, as they are not rules-specific.) I've been playtesting the tables and plan to share them online once I feel confident they won't need a revision.
Like Jeff, I really prefer to set any SW game right after the original film, and not take into account much of what came after (a tiny little bit of Empire Strikes Back might manage to trickle in for my game though.) Unfortunately, I find it very hard to get players into that mindset, or even understand why it might be a good thing to try.

Yep, that's some inspiring stuff Jeff put up. Unfortunately, he's using Encounter Critical as his base rules. Personally, I'd rather see an OD&D version (though a lot of what he's written so far can be easily transferred over to OD&D rules).

Encounter Critical does have a few things going for it when it comes to combat. OD&D combat system doesn't really reflect how useless armor is in Star Wars. If anything it seems to attract blaster fire (Thank you WEG!), but would probably stop a sword pretty well. Being able to run and dodge (Ala Solo running through the Death Star) serves most of the characters far better. A bonus to armor class fro dexterity seems to be the best form of defence there is. Another problem is damage from blasters. Blasters are going to kill just about anybody they hit. That isn't going to be a problem for higher level characters, so perhaps a modified level progression of 1st, 4th, 8th makes more sense, or not. And lightsabers... well if they hit something man sized, it's toast. Something like a dragon will be hurt, but probably still be able to take out a ist level character no problem. Just some random musings.
By the way Jeff, I loved the list of possible starting equipment!

One problem, if you go by the Star Wars canon, is that armored Stormtroopers indeed should be better defended against swords than against blaster fire, yet in Return of the Jedi sticks and stones broke their bones! All the more reason to limit the campaign to stuff that came out surrounding the first film though.

Does anyone know if Jeff Rients did more with this, or is that one post the only one?

I don't think I blogged much more on this. Player attendance was very unstable at the time I was on this riff, so at the end of the third session (which capped off the first adventure nicely with a big explosion) we rolled credits and went back to D&D.

Hey, Jeff. Glad you could stop in! The info you posted looks pretty streamlined, which is quite in the OD&D spirit, but if you have any other notes or whatever I'd appreciate seeing what you did.

How do I get a copy of Encounter Critical? Is EC very different from OD&D?
