Has anyone played "Battle of the Five Armies" before? In your opinion, how did it rate vs. other board wargames of the timeperiod (ie 1970's)? Is it worth hunting for a used copy? I'd love get a look at the rules. I've found a photo of the board and it looks pretty simple and easy to reproduce if necessary, but the rules are harder to locate. TIA. I had a copy of this back in the day. I'll be darned if I have a clue what happened to it, however. I'm pretty sure there was both a bagged version (B&W cover) and a boxed version (color cover). I had the bagged one. I remember this game as being not terribly amazing, but I did like the map. For LotR wargames I like the old SPI War of the Ring game, although it clearly was for a different situation.

Great review!! Now I really want to play it! If only I could get a copy of the rules.

I have a copy of the boxed game that I am willing to sell, though I don't have a clue what it's worth. I also have a boxed copy of SPI's War of the Ring that is most assuredly NOT for sale!
