I am looking for players in the Des Moines area for a new OD&D/S&W Core campaign. I have been a DM and player since ’81. I have experience with every version of D&D plus many, many other systems both old school and modern. After spending most of the ‘90s relegated to collecting and semi annual gaming, I’ve been actively gaming on a weekly basis since 2003. Unfortunately, no one in my current group is interested in an old school game.

Good luck! I hope you find players.
In the old days you could start a game at a hobby shop or library and most people would put up with what you run. I don't know if that would work for you but if you're willing to put up with some casual play until your group gels it can often work. People looking for a game will often take what the GM is offering.
In Iowa, maybe you could get a bunch of the Republican primary candidates to join up in hope of soliciting votes.

Thanks for the well wishes! I've met a several different people through hobby shops over the years. I'll be hitting the one store left here that kinda sorta carries rpgs. I figure if I'm looking for old school players, this would be the ideal place! So many views to the thread and no nibbles... I don't think the Republican candidates would survive very long in my game. I'm a juvenile court caseworker working for the public schools in Des Moines!

Is there a local university/college/community college with an RPG club? That's another reasonable possibility. Good luck with it.

I thought about checking into the college thing before. I'll have to look into it.

Thanks for the invite Kesher! I'm afraid the price of gas may be a bit prohibitive for me to attend a regular game up North. I do try to get up there a few times a year to hang out with my cousin. He's the one that got me into D&D originally. We actually just recently got back to playing AD&D.
I'll shoot you a line the next time I head up there. I was planning on hitting The Source, so maybe we could have a little meet-up there.

I get to Des Moines on a fairly regular basis, even though I now live in Madison, Wisconsin. If you end up running something, please keep me informed. For some ideas about how to find players, you could do worse than to set up a Facebook page or a Meetup group.

And if Victor ends up playing in one of your games, well, kiss your carefully planned encounters goodbye...

And if Victor ends up playing in one of your games, well, kiss your carefully planned encounters goodbye... Excellent! My favorite kind of player! How does the saying go? No plan survives contact with the enemy? Players like that teach you the value of NOT carefully planning your encounters.

I just joined, and live in Kansas city, MO. How has your quest for players gone?

Google+ put my local search on hold. It's been very easy to find people chomping at the bit to play. If you're interested in a game, I'm starting up a Age of Conan OD&D game in a week or two.
