"Telthalion and I shall scout if you wish," says Lómëluin, "though I too have heard great tales of the stealth and cunning of the kin of the Ringbearer. Perhaps this is the time to show their skills? If it be so, we shall take the third rank of battle."
To Telthalion; "I hoped to spare you the dark of this place, my friend, but we have need of your marksmanship. I ask that you walk beside me if you will."

"Hepti bring torches, Miödvitnir the hound, and Vestri fill our flasks with Long Lake beer! Síli son of Víli to war!
"Norin of the Lonely Mountain, hammer and flail march together at the front line!"

OOC: I think that means Sili and Norin will take the front rank with flail and warhammer.
We need a row of three spearmen behind us, then two rows of three archers each, if we have that many.

While Sili seeks the attentions of Ymir the physician at the camp site, the remaining company of well armed Men and Elves and Norin the Dwarf lend council as to the timing and form of their next sortie.
It is deemed wise to press on as soon as is practical.
It is also judged that Sili and Norin should have the honour of taking the lead into the halls of their forefathers.
Next should come a rank of three with spear, and there are but three Men in the great company of 30 possessed of such arms; Dalian of Esgaroth (warder of Celglin the Half-Elf seer), and Éohild and Dernfara the Rohirrim warriors -- more accustomed to fighting from horseback but equally grim on foot.
Behind these should come the archers, and the Elvish folk shall serve admirably with their bow craft; Legandir, Lomeluin,Elindir and also Telthalion are all ready with the supple limbed bows of Rivendell and Mirkwood and a keen eye with which to aim.
Behind these, presumably, shall come torch bearers?
Shall the Hobbits be sent ahead into the darkness to discover the enemy? None have yet agreed to this wisdom.
What of Soval and his Men? And the others?

Telthalion gives a curious smile and replies in Sindarin "I could hardly stand by and watch you go hither alone, my Captain." Lómëluin smiles grimly and nods his head; "To it, then. We've a long and dark road before us. I would walk it as swiftly as we may." To the Hobbits: "What say you, my bold halflings? Do you scout the way, or do we?"

The Shire-folk are lingering outside at the camp -- more prepared for afternoon-tea than for Troll hunting, it would seem.

Legandir adjusts his cloak after the flight down the stairs and idly kicks a small rock - perhaps a fragment of troll - down the last steps.
"I think the task is left to us", he observes, noting the serene absence of hobbits in the vicinity.

Lómëluin, wonders quietly to himself whether the legendary stealth of the hobbit-folk lies in the fact that they're never around to be seen in the first place... ( ;D)
Then he turns on his heel. "It is time the risk was shared by all, I think," he growls; "I shall return as swiftly as I may."
And he stalks off to find a Hobbit or two...
(O.O.C: Sorry, ways - seems I cross-posted with you. Lómëluin would ideally like to collar a Hobbit or so to share in the work, but not if it's going to hold everyone else up. If we're ready to move on he'll take position in the marching order as indicated.)

Soval and his men stand ready to join, but wonders at the commotion. Surely, we should bring together the whole corps, proceeding when we are all ready to make our way downward...he says as much if there is uncertainty, but will follow in the rear with his lantern, sword, and henchmen if the group simply cannot wait.

Lady Éohild holds her spear tightly,"So our work here has begun, with a little Troll hunting. Let us stay together and be alert! For who knows what else we may encounter in this dark place."

Arbenbard: "The opportunity for exploration lies within... hopefully this seer shall not die within! I will walk with the torch bearers, with Nat at my side. Scouts, my only request is that you send immediate word if you come across anything that requires scholarly investigation - runes, inscriptions, mechanisms, scrolls, etc."

Elindir holds his bow in hand, ready to once again descend into the passages of the deep, Hobbits or no. Although it would be learned indeed to see if buggers are really able to muster up the courage from the old days, if they even had it at all.

Dalain of Esgaroth is ready as the order stands above, Celglin will be following at a distance. Very good. The following folk have yet to find their place in the marching order: Burmon, the Dwarf porter. Ardenbard the seer, Nat Pickthorn of Bree (Ardenbard's protector), Soval Hackbeard, the Hero of Swanfleet, and company, Barald the old boar, woodsman of South Mirkwood, Eremin Sulk the sneak, Baraglin Banks and Largo Harfoot the Hobbits. Please advise...

Eremin Sulk will prefer to travel in the middle of the party, among the torch bearers.
But he's available to scout ahead, should the current scouts need a break.

The following folk have yet to find their place in the marching order: Burmon, the Dwarf porter. Burmon will stay towards the rear of the party. He'll have his lamp and oil ready in case we need more light, but otherwise he'll come along just to carry anything back that might need to be carried (i.e. he'll port, as it were).

After much faffing about, the company is finally set to go, with Elindir and Legandir now getting extremely fidgety in the semi-gloom at the foot of the long stair...

We march in? Back to the big room where the trolls were met?
Assuming my post in the other thread holds up Berangar, Ran, and Sutherland should be removed from the marching order.

Norin points up the stairs with his war hammer. "Away, scouts! And be quick and quiet! Don't try to engage - just get information and return; we'll give you a lead and then start up ourselves. And keep an eye out for an ambush!"

"Stay forty feet behind us," whispers Elindir , as he begins to creep down the ancient stop steps. "If there's trouble, I'll give you a whistle. After that, I'm sure the bloodthirsty dwarves will know how best to entertain our foes."

Legandir resheaths Morfil and fits an arrow to his Rivendell bow.
He nods once to Lomeluin and takes a position beside Elindir as they descend once again the stair.

Torch and lantern light is good for 30ft of illumination.
However, the Elves and Dwarves have excellent eye-sight in dim conditions and can see as far as 60ft.
The visibility indicated on the scratch map is as far as Elindir, Legandir, Sili and Norin can see as the company begins its march UP the long stair...
