I was listening to an interview with bill Owens and he mentioned that mr.bledsaw used Middle earth as a campaign before the wilderlands. I really enjoyed this thread, but was wondering since the magic kept get brought up if someone had an alternative system for magic. Maybe something like keeping the spells by day as memorized and than rolling on a like for chain mail. If you fail to cast, you lose the spell? I got the angmar book. I think it would be a great setting a thousand years before the war of the ring. A nation ruled by an evil king, people worshiping Morgoth. It mentions ruins and orc caves. Would be a great old school setting, hexcrawling and looting.

I had an interesting thought about this. What about the Dagor Dagorath? I could see a campaign that is centered around the return of both Sauron and Morgoth as an interesting one.

Since it’s supposed to take place in the future, how about a Zothique or Dying Earth campaign that suddenly gets inundated with Middle-earth elements as the Dagorath befalls?

That is one way you could do it. My idea was more like this:
The Seventh Age: Return of the Shadow
The dominion of Men is ending. After being long forgotten, the Elves return to Middle-Earth bringing with them rumors that a new Shadow is rising. The Dwarves flee from their mountain holds telling tales of wars with Dragons. The united kingdom of Gondor and Rohan crumbles when the king is assassinated by a risen Nazgul. The hobbits are locked in a battle for their lands with goblins and wargs. As if this was not enough the fires of Mordor are rekindled under the dark lord, who was once one of the Blue Wizards. New battles have been fought on old battlegrounds. At the Hornburg, Rohan looses a decisive battle to the Dunlandings who are reenforced by Uruks and a Balrog (Possibly a risen Gothmog). Unknown to all is that Morgoth and Sauron are regaining their strength in a rebuilt Utumno...
Or something like that.

I've played around with similar ideas on and off, (mainly when I was fooling around with MERP until I realised that system wasn't really working for me). All I'd come up with was something vague inspired very loosely by Tolkein's Return of the Shadow - a heretical Gondorian cult worshipping Anatar the Giver of Gifts, a driven Dwarf Lord seeking to recover the lost Seven Rings (by cutting them out of the stomachs of various dragons if necessary), mysterious thefts from the tower of Orthanc, strange figures lurking on the borders of the Shire and showing a particular interest in the descendants of the Hobbit members of the Fellowship (particularly the Fairbairn and Gardner families, who regularly despatch offspring to Minas Tirith to serve in hereditary honorary positions: Guards of the Citadel, Ladies-in-Waiting etc), and a mad old man incarcerated in the Houses of Healing, having been found washed up on the shore near Dol Amroth clad only in tattered robes of blue... As I said, I've never really managed to work up the juice to take it further, mainly because I think the plot structure was looking too linear. Fun playing 'what happens next?' though...

What I want is something that is set in Middle-Earth but can easily ignore some of the LOTR canon. I've been rereading The Silmarillion and Children of Hurin and could easily start early and divulge the timeline from there rather than work around the events of the Rings.
