I just watched this on DVD. It's an Irish animation about a young monk, Brendan, in Dark Ages Ireland. The abbot is obsessed with building fortifications to protect the abbey from barbarians, but Brendan and the other monks are more interested in producing books. When a monk famous for his book illustrations arrives at the abbey Brendan falls under his influence and bravely ventures outside the abbey, into the forest, to find some berries needed to create ink.
It's quite a short film (72 minutes), and ends somewhat abruptly, but the animation is beautiful and the sequence in the forest is particularly evocative. So if you ever want to watch a children's animation, I recommend it.

Agreed; I saw this a few months ago and thought it was great. Definitely worth the 72 minutes!

The Secret of KellsThis is an astoundingly beautiful animated film that was actually nominated for an Oscar last year, though I only just heard about it. Irish monks, fey spirits, Crom Cruach, and the Book of Kells. What more could you want? Much adaptable rpg goodness, too.

Kesher, thank you for posting this.
I have Netflix and fortunately this film was available for instant viewing.
I was very impressed!
At first, I looked at the style of art and thought "Not my sort of thing", but after the first five minutes I was amazed at this unique animation concept, and the story and music was just as good.
Good find.

My pleasure---it was a lucky find for the kesher household, too!
And thanks for adding that important point about it streaming free on Netflix---I totally forgot to add that!

Both my 7 year-old and my 3.5 year-old twins are utterly fascinated by it.
There's one "spooky" section with Crom Cruach, but it should be fine---Max (my oldest) really doesn't like scary movies, but hasn't had a problem with this.

I caught it on netflix a few months back. Watched it with my 2-yr-old daughter and she was fine, even with the wolves and such. But I think she's too young to really be scared of stuff.

Watched and enjoyed, thank you! There is actually a lot of fear and suspense in this film, what with the wolves and wikings, and my daughter had to hide her head under the covers a few times, but it passed the test - we really liked it. Thanks!
