Egad! I hope they don't exercise any 'editorial control' - by which I mean, pack the books with pages of stuff-ups...
But more power to the designer, this is an amazing game.

But sinenomine has done an awesome job...releasing a very polished product and hopefully retains full 'editorial control'...

I hope they don't pull the free PDF stuff. I have introduced a few people to SWN using it.

I can confirm that the free stuff will definitely not be pulled. I'm putting together some expansion material and a new cover for the MongSWN version, and I may or may not keep the current PDF in print, but the current PDF will remain free for the foreseeable future. The same goes for the Mandate Archive stuff, which also has no plan for shifting to pay.

I'm putting together some expansion material and a new cover for the MongSWN version Any chance of an update patch? Like in computer programs where if I buy the program at v1.0, I get the v1.1 patch for free - so if someone's already bought a print copy of the original SVN, they get a free pdf with just the bits that are new in Mong. I'm confident that would be not only fair but also hugely popular and highly stimulating for sales figures.* * Meaning I want it.

Alas, the MongSWN hardback is going to cost $15 more than the classic hardback, simply because adding in distribution and getting it into hobby shops and bookstores is not cheap. As such, I need to give buyers $15 more worth of stuff in it to make it a reasonable sale. None of it's going to invalidate what's in the current hardback, as it's just going to be additional material for GMs and players to use.

I for one will be keeping my eye out for it.
Looking forward to the new Mandate Archive files when they arrive.

cooper: positively brill idea about using CM for scifi spaceship combat! Oddly that had never crossed my monkeymind. I like the concept of equating different vessel-types to LF, HF, AF/LH, MH, HH. It begs for an analogous tripartite ruleset, along the lines of 1:20 scale, 1:1 scale and some creative interpretation for 'fantasy' combat. Perhaps combatting the gargantuan star destroyers or the death star could qualify as 'fantastic' combat.

I'm thinking about melding CT space combat with Full Thrust and some form of CM to develop this idea. FT divides ships into three classes: Escorts (Courier Boat, Scout Ship, Corvette, Frigate, Destroyer), Cruisers (Lt. Cr., Escort Cr., Hvy Cr.), Capital Ships (Battlecruiser, Battleship, Battledreadnought, Superdreadnought, Lt. Carrier, Fleet Carrier). Also Merchant class ships (Bulk Tanker, Hvy Freighter, Exploration Cruiser). I don't see "Fighter" mentioned (yet). I guess we can designate them as "escort" class for the time being. LF, HF...Escorts AF, LH...Cruisers MH, HH...Capital Ships EDIT: fighters are on page 16. Serves me right for not completely reading it first!

That sounds interesting DD. Fighters in Full Thrust use different rules than the larger ships (don't need orders, move in groups of up to six, have limited range). They are bought as systems for the larger ships and are detailed in the Advanced rules of the original Full Thrust book. There were updates to the system in More Thrust the two fleet books.
There was a version of Full Thrust put out by BITS a 3rd party Traveller publisher (don't know if they are still around though) that was redesigned for Traveller miniature fleet battles. Power Projection was the name IIRC. I never saw or played that version so I don't know how useful it would be for a port over to SWN.

I just found out about a "Core" edition with more material than the print HC I bought a year or so ago. Does anyone have it and can they describe what is in the extra material that I don't have? Just curious.

If you mean the Mongoose edition, then it has extra rules and info on robots, mechs (somewhat similar to spaceship-rules), and some society creation guidelines (in the form of very useful and inspirational tables); also, the chapter describing decisions of the author to better understand the workings of the system has been updated to include comments on the new content.

I've been following the series since it came out and I was wondering if anyone has heard if any new adventures in the 'M-Series' (Hard Light was M-1) are in the pipeline?

Don't think it's actually a part of the M-Series, but AFAIK, now that Kevin is done with his Spears of the Dawn project, one of his next products will be something for SWN, focusing on trade and mercantile campaigns.

I love SWN. It's the perfect blend of OD&D and Classic Traveller!

The Merchant Campaign, "Suns of Gold" is now available. The cover is a break from the previous style. Looks like something Chris Foss would have drawn.
Have skimmed it. Looks good. Would have liked more examples on how to work out trade/colonisation stats though. Have some ideas for one of the worlds from the original sector, but not sure how to apply them.

To give an existing world a trade or a trouble table, you can either just pick one of the eight example templates in chapter three or fill out your own with the example commodities or the commodity creation tables in the same chapter. If you want more leads for generating mercantile adventures, you can just pick whichever of the 24 world tags best fits what you've already established about the planet. For colonization stats such as Morale, Supplies, Material and so forth, it's going to depend largely on what the PCs bring with them. If they manage to find a planet of fanatically loyal masochist ascetics eager to colonize their new world, then they're probably going to have Morale 10. If they're dragging a ticket off-planet through a city-world's slums and taking whatever desperate people grab it, they're probably going to have Morale 5 or so. For their Supplies and Materials and so forth, they'll have whatever they physically bring to their new colony in their own ships or through their Import/Export Line holdings.

I don't know but I broke down and bought the PDF of the Core Rules so I'll compare them to my copy of the free rules and see if I notice any differences outside of the additional "stuff added".

Okay, according to the DriveThru preview of both files, the PDF you have to purchase has an additional 40 pages over the free one (with the starfield artwork).

I've picked up an album entitled "Walking on a Dream" by a group (duo?) calling themselves 'Empire of the Sun'. The album artwork is in a Science/Fantasy vein that would be perfect for anyone looking for campaign inspiration. If anyone is interested please contact and I'll see about making scans.

I've been following Luke and Nick for a few years now, maybe 2... I really like Walking on a Dream, but there were several songs on it that needed work. Their followup, Ice on the Dune, is thematically and sonically superior in every way. I really enjoy the song DNA. It took me several listens to really appreciate the consistency of Ice on the Dune. Where Walking on a Dream is fairly inconsistent, Ice on the Dune's list is thematically progressive. I dig it. And the visual inspirations from the covers are a mixed bit for me. Walking on a Dream is very sci-fi, but Ice on the Dune is less so. Still. If you're into electronic music, then it's worth checking out. Certainly not for everyone.
