This badge (or pin) shows the Sutherland red dragon plus the TSR Face Logo. It has a 1980 date as part of the Face Logo. Note that the Face Logo never appeared on a Holmes Basic Set; it wasn't used on a Basic Set until the Moldvay one in 1981. IIRC, this image is from an old auction run by Paul Stormberg, although I didn't keep good notes on where I grabbed it from. (It is possible it is a later bootleg creation).
Edit: It's also interesting to note that the artwork shows much more the dragon (e.g. hindlegs) than the Basic set cover.

Here's another late usage of Sutherland Red Dragon artwork in conjunction with the Face Logo:
It's from the magazine Games Merchandising (a retailer magazine), and shows the TSR booth at the Hobby Industry of America (HIA) 1981 trade show. Dig the red Face logo chairs!
The above scan was originally posted by Alexander1968 on the Acaeum in 2009, in the following thread: www.acaeum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8899 Among the other scans he posted from the same magazines, there is one showing the Holmes Basic Set in the center of a bunch of games (the context is not clear):
The D&D logo is changed a bit from the Holmes Basic Set - here it arches over the picture.
1981 was the transition year from Holmes Basic to the new Moldvay Basic Set. This catalog features the new Basic and Expert sets, with the Sutherland red dragon appearing only on these t-shirts. The t-shirts were $6 each, and were apparently low quality (not surviving many washings), which explains why they very rarely seen on Ebay.
I must have mis-read something. I thought that I saw an article (from a link on DF, I believe) that said that there were four potential designs and to vote for which ONE would be printed. The "ampersand" design won.
I assumed that this meant the Holmes one wasn't for sale.
