Okay guys, seriously, should I rent this movie, or will it piss me off as a lifelong REH fan? Opinions? Thanks in advance.

Rent it. Good GOD, yes, rent it. It's outstanding...and even moreso, by all means BUY THE BOOK UPON WHICH IT IS BASED. This is a memoir from a woman who spent huge amounts of time with Howard during the last three years of his life, someone who truly and deeply loved the man, and presented him for the world to see, warts and all--and does not make herself out to be a saint in the process. She, too, displays her foibles for the world to see. Price's motive in writing the book was because works like de Camp's "Dark Valley Destiny" really pissed her off and she wanted people to see the Howard she knew and loved (and sometimes despised). It's a great flick, with probably the greatest kiss ever filmed, and the book is twice as good. I wrote a review of the book on RPGNet: www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/13/13770.phtml

As Jason says, it's a terrific film. It's not flawless but what film is? It provides a much needed corrective to a lot of misunderstanding and untruths about REH. Vincent D'Onofrio is great in it; by all accounts, his portrayal of Howard is spot-on, right down to his accent and his walk (not to mention his proper pronunciation of the name "Conan"). It's well worth watching. FWIW, I wrote a review of it on my blog back in March: grognardia.blogspot.com/2010/05/whole-wide-world.html

Thanks fellows, I will rent the movie and buy the book. You've convinced me! Now the clips I've just watched on youtube look fantastic, and I'm also thinking that I might even be able to get my wife to sit down and watch it with me.

Probably the closest we will ever get to a real Conan movie. I had to buy the newer DVD with commentary track on it. Worthy purchase!

Absolutely a great film. And, heh, my wife watched it, too (and loved it!)

Well, I won an auction for it on eBay for $1.86 + $3 shipping. Looking forward to watching it. Of course, now you guys tell me there is a newer dvd release with commentary. Curse you, MilkManX! Fine, fine, it's really my fault for not checking back on this thread before ordering the dvd. I guess we'll see which version I get. Thanks for the help, fellows!

As it turns out, I got the special edition w/commentaries. Now to convince to watch this movie with me instead of, say, Grey's Anatomy.

I admit to not mentioning anything about Conan, Kull, or Kane when I loaded the dvd. For some unexplainable reason, my wife doesn't share my interest in all things Swords & Sorcery. She likes Vincent D'onofrio just fine though. I said something like "Its a love story about an isolated pulp writer in 1930's Texas." When Howard started talking about Conan, she gave me that look...but kept watching. We both enjoyed the flick.
