The Dragon #22 (Feb 1979) contains a “Dungeon Masters Guide Preview”. Only 9 pages long, supposedly it should be sufficient to play AD&D along with the PHB and what is already known from OD&D. “Included are all combat and saving throw matrices and certain ‘newly discovered’ magic items which have already appeared in print in one of the Dungeon Modules [G/D series]. Magic Items which are explained in the text of the modules are not repeated here.” Since, as I have mentioned in the past, my game of choice is “D&D circa 1978” (i.e. OD&D plus the Players Handbook), this article is of interest to me. The section on magic items is, of course, completely unobjectionable and could be added to any OD&D or BD&D game and no harm done. Some items are more interesting than others, but that’s normal. The combat information is basically the exact same information as was later printed on the Dungeon Masters Screen. Now, I love that screen and will probably put it up whether or not I use its tables. So on the one hand, I might as well use it. On the other hand, I dunno, at that point I feel like I’ve crossed over too far into that edition and in a nebulous way lost completely the OD&D focus. Probably over-thinking it and this doesn’t matter one whit at the end of the day. Just wonder if anyone else is in the same boat and/or has any thoughts. Oh, by the way, there should be “nothing” to prevent you from finding a copy of this material if you don’t already have it.
