I just wanted to say I’ve given the S&W:WB another look, and I believe it is the best intro to the tabletop roleplaying hobby currently in-print. I of course have my ancient TSR books which serve me just fine, but for any stranger online who was clueless about D&D and wanted to get started, S&W:WB is where I would point them. It is unintimidating and has enough "magic" to draw someone in. Good job, guys!

It's an amazing product, isn't it? I wish there were more like it. Kudos to Marv and Matt for bringing it to life and to John Adams for helping it live up to its name.

I am starting a campaign this fall with my friend and his three kids. He has played Holmes, Moldvay Cook, BECMI and AD&D. I asked what he wanted to start with and he wanted something simple. I showed him S&W and White Box, and he immediately wanted White Box - less crunch, more imagination was how he saw it. So the lack of game mechanics was a plus for him - just enough data for a general impression of the character and world, and the rest can be winged.

I also can't think of a better way to get into D&D. I would even go as far as to say that this statement includes previous out of print efforts (by TSR) which were meant to be introductory, unlike S&W WB which first and foremost is a retroclone (non?).
The only criticism I have is the existence of the two AC systems, which I know is mandatory for S&W products so it's no fault of the writers, which could confuse a newbie. The ascending AC system would serve better as it is easier to understand. But even if it was the descending one it would also be ok, it's the existence of both which would make the newbie (who has no knowledge of the history of D&D) ask why.

My thoughts are these: * Ascending AC is probably more logical to someone who has never played D&D or its clones. "Bigger is better" tends to make sense to people. * Descending AC is probably more useful to someone who wants to grab a professional module and use it with minimal modification. I guess I don't see a real drawback to including both. It seems to be a win-win, except for the fact that someone not familar with the game's evolution might wonder why there are two.

I have my Whitebox and really like it. I am going to do a bit of resetting and base my game off the WB and slowly add things if needed. The hard part for me is dropping things I have learned from my years in the hobby.
However, for new players, that do not have that history, I can see how well that can fly with this set.

I have made up "special old gamer geek box sets" and the fantasy game I chose is Swords & Wizardry white box.
