Anyone remember this one? Originally by Heritage then re released by FGU. I ran it a couple of times and heavily re-wrote it for use in a Horseclans setting. I actually really liked the combat and magic systems. I didn't care for the social status rules so much, though, and found the Experience system quite clumsy. But I dusted my copy off a couple of days ago due to a sudden urge to revisit Horseclans....

A game with some really nifty pieces of design (flavourful as hell magic; everything is a playable PC) with some pretty clunky design IMO. I keep thinking you could rewrite it for BRP pretty easily, but never quite had the energy to tackle it.

What was clunky about it?
This remains one of the best game designs (IMHO of course).

I picked up a copy of this at a convention a while ago.
It strikes me as post-AD&D overcomplicated, although maybe I should give it another look. (It was such a small box I was hoping it was something I could get and then run right away at that convention -- but it was not to be.)

I purchased it off ebay this year. Looking for resources on the web, I discovered one of the highest profile Sword Bearer fans is also local. We could get a Sword Bearer Renaissance going around these parts.

I have owned this game for quite some time, but never got to play it. I remember the very favorable review in Dragon being very influential in my purchase (very much a trend back in those days ). Edit: I had to go back and figure out that the review is in issue #71

What was clunky about it? This remains one of the best game designs (IMHO of course). You know, I haven't looked at it in years, but i recall that when I did, I kept thinking that it woudl be much simpler to hew more towards BRP. There were a lot of calculations as I recall.
