@yhency - Your offer is a bit low, but you are charismatic, but you are an elf, but the men are brave - we'll roll the dice and see what happens... Westbrook accepts your offer - he is equipped with chain, shield and sword. I've heard that elves can't die, so I think this should be a successful partnership Yhency gives him a firm handshake, "Welcome aboard, Westbrook!" Flinn is not too sure. "I'd want 100 gold up front before I go adventuring against nasty critters, and if we can't get along after the first adventuring sojourn, I'm out of here"Yhency stammers, "100? 100 gold? Oh, well, if you're asking for that kind of cash up front then you must have some experience. My apologies for mistaking you as a new recruit! Please do provide your references, and I'll check them out as soon as I can." Flinn and Yhency stare at each other for a while. Finally, Flinn nods, once. "I can't let my buddy Westbrook down. We have a deal"

Kell walks into the Red Axe Ale House as Flandil and Jariel are walking out. He smiles in satisfaction - this is a dwarf hang out! The ceiling is properly proportioned, the booths are sturdy wood, and the seats are the perfect height. Four dwarves sit at a table playing diamondback and drinking coffee, and a dwarven bartender is polishing the bar while he chats with an idle (dwarven) barmaid. In the corner, smoking a pipe, sits an old man with a long beard.
The dwarves at the table raise a cheer when Kell walks in. "Hurrah! No elf this time!"

"But you are more to my liking!" Kell marches over to the bar, "My name is Kelmult Ironhand, Kell to my friends, and I want to buy a round for the house!" Kell will chat with everyone in the room who is at all interested, see if there is anyone of his acquaintance here, or known to those here, try to find out all the gossip....and then broach the subject of the "spiders from the sewers and where did they come from?" OOC: This is (a) a get acquainted and (b) an information gathering visit. Kell is using his Cha of 13, and some of that 300 gold he just got, to win friends, make contacts, and learn what he can from the dwarven community.

(Not entirely sure how William would feel about a thief henchman, but what the heck.) In other news, how am I getting on with the spider temple people?

Now, where do you think we might find someone who has lock-picking and stealth skills?" I'm subtracting 100 gp from my gold: 20 gp to each henchman 50 gp for advertising/whispering campaign 10 gp for registering as a mage Edit: So with the 300 gp additional, the net is 200 gp more.

What do you guys want to know about teh spider temple? I've already given information out twice about it 1. What are their pay rates? 2. Will they provide anti-venom to those fighting against the spiders? 3. If not, what if, any discounts will they provide to us for the neutralize poison potions? 4. I have a hard time envisioning any religion that worships spiders as being non-evil, so are they evil...in fact or by reputation? 5. I'd like to know what the Dwarves in the Red Axe have to say about the Spider Temple folks? Are any of them working for them to clean out the sewers, and below, of spiders? and 6. Where and when do we sign up for the spider hunt?

Flandil thinks the guy at the Tourist Information Centre was hinting at thief guild contacts. One of Yhency's henchman also suggests the Tipsey Trickster Tavern - but guard your purse!

The dwarves are happy to see a dwarf from a different clan. These dwarves belong to the clan of the Bronze Hammer, a dwarven enclave in the East Mountains. You start talking about the area, and they relate to you a hair-raising story of how there is a tower to the North by Lake Schuwang-Nau that exudes an aura of fear. One of these days they'll get a band together and investigate, for there is sure to be lots of treasure there. They would need to have a legendary hero with them, though, they think.
In town, their take on the spiders is the priests caused the problem, the priests can fix it. "When spiders attack - have another ale!"

William decided to check out the spider temple for more specific information. The priests are coldly formal, and the temple gives him the creeps.
The priests are not offering pay, but they are offering support. You can keep anything you find down below, except for spider badges. Any brooches you find they would like returned. They can cure your party's wounds, and provide you with some supplies. Their offer of support would be good for one week
They will give you an initial batch of five Neutralize Poison potions, all that is left of their stock. They are making more, but it takes time.
You gather that they are a strictly Lawful temple, a bit harsh perhaps, but in good standing with the magistrate and the city administration. King Hargor is a bit concerned they may be getting too much power.
See my previous post from the Red Axe
Any time! They will also provide you with 6 healing potions. They have also heard that some creatures can only be harmed by silver

Musing for the future: I wonder if you can design a purse that you can cast wizard lock on so that only you can reach in and get stuff. As good a time as any to ask: is there a bank in Verbosh? I mean, Yhency has 1740 gold according to my records. No way he walks around with all of that, and I don't feel comfortable just leaving it in the inn.

Yes, there is a very safe bank in Verbosh - never been robbed. Banks money for free if over 100 gold. Will make loans, and will make change for 4% fee

Jariel will deposit most of his gold in the bank.
What are the options for silver weapons? Jariel will seek some silver tipped arrows for sure. A silver tipped spear might be the most practical.

"I'm not a legendary hero...not yet anyway!" Kell laughs and slaps a dwarf or two on the back, "But maybe someday I'll go check that tower out!" "Have another ale is a good answer to most any problem." Kell agrees affably, "But still, if they pay well, it might be worth my while to take their gold while bashing in the heads of a few spiders." "I've got a few friends here in the city with me...none true people like us, you understand, but brave none the less." Kell says, "If we decide to sally against these spiders would none of you like to join us?" "Bash a few spiders, earn some gold pieces, and spend it on many mugs of ale?" Kell raises his mug, "Good times!"

When William makes his report to the group, Kell is going to grumble about the Spider Priests not paying anything, but will perk up at the idea of getting to keep anything we find, then worry about there not being anything worth having down in the sewers of the city, "What's the good of fighting spiders as big as a horse if we aren't getting rich from it. At least rich enough to buy a few rounds of ale for the house!" "Still, it beats doing nothing and so far that's all we seem to be doing in this rat hole of a town!" grouses the burly Dwarf.

William will find the silversmith and have his mace and throwing hammers silver plated. Then he'll put most of his money in the bank (I seem to recall having a bit of coin...)
And before going down the spider holes, he'll switch from his traveling chain mail into his fighting plate mail.

The cost to get any weapon silver plated with this Silversmith is equal to its original cost in Book 1

Ok, Jariel will have his sword silver plated for 10 gp, buy 20 silver arrows (100 gp), and based on silver tipped arrows being 10x the cost of a regular arrow, he will pay 20 gp for a silver tipped spear (I assume the arrows are a solid silver tip, he wants a spear done up the same way - silver plating will wear off as his sword is used).
The rest of his money say 100 gp will be deposited in the bank.

Kell doesn't intend to cover his good, solid, Dwarven, iron with silver...but having heard about some of those spiders not being hurt except by silver weapons, does seek out a spear with a silver head.
He plans you use his good old iron ax for most of his fighting, but he'll keep the silver headed spear in reserve in case the stories are true.

Gallaine pays to have her new sword silvered as well, and then banks all of her remaining gold (300 or so I think, not counting our recent windfall).
Then she is good to go! She asks the Spider priests if they have a map indicating the worst infested areas.

Flandil thinks that employment by the Spider Temple with its offers of healing and neutralise poison potions is the best offer, better than any monetary pay which may be available from other sources. Flandil deposits all except 100gp on-hand and his two 100-gp gems into the bank. His rapier and main-gauche are already silvered, so he passes on that service. Flandil pays a visit to Nerojoule to see if he has any neutralise poison potions available. Flandil, with his bodyguards to guide him, treks all the way across the city to the other side of the city, to find the alchemist's shop nestled in a corner of the city's hexagonal walls, close to the imposing Spider Temple. Nerojoule is a nervous, fidgeting man with balding hair and eye-glasses. "Ah yes, good customers. Are you here to buy a potion? I just made a Flying potion, my best one yet, ha ha! Or perhaps to sell? I give excellent rates you know, yes I do, ha ha! Nerojoule the Genius, that's what they call me, ha ha !" "I wish to enquire as to anything you may have, or be able to manufacture, which would provide efficacious against arachnid venom."
