OOC: Okay! When Karl reaches Romeo, the convulsions have become worse and the mercenary's skin is flushed and drenched in cold sweat. As Karl begins his examination he immediately notices that Romeo's right hand is badly swollen and that there is a pinprick wound on the top of his palm. Karl makes sure that Romeo is breathing and has a heartbeat then he moves down to the obviously swollen hand. He sucks in his breath at the sight of the pinprick wound on the swollen hand and exclaims, "Poison! See, there is a mark here where the venom entered his body!" OOC: Does Karl recognize the symptoms from any previous experience? If he does insert his suspicions in the paragraph below. "It could be a spider or scorpion...or something worse." pulling off his belt he hands it to whoever is there and says, "Quick, tie this tightly around his arm. It might be too late, but we must prevent any more of the poison from getting out to the rest of his body." Karl then, pulls his dagger and makes an incision like an x over the pin prick making Romeo bleed. "The blood in his hand is corrupt and must be forced from his body." Karl squeezes the man's forearm pushing down his arm with as much pressure as he can then palpating the hand to force more and more blood out through the cut. Karl says, "May the gods help us both!" then taking a deep breath leans down and looks in the wound for a stinger or pin. If he sees it he will use the dagger to dig it out and then he sucks the wound, spitting the blood onto the ground. He does this several times making sure to not swallow any of the blood. "Call for a physician." Karl gasps, "and I need clean water to purge his wound and get his tainted blood off of me." OOC: I know that icing his arm might help, but there is no ice in the desert, and obviously antidotes might exist, but Karl isn't a physician...or magician, so *he* won't have them. So, other than using pressure and a tourniquet and trying to suck out the poison, does Karl know any other treatments that might help a poisoned man?

Iseul: "Maybe there is no curse after all. Karl, could the wound have been caused by a scorpion or some other poisonous animal hidden inside the purse along with the more or less worthless copper coins? In that case it may have run or crawled into hiding somewhere after having been let out of the purse." "Where does the purse with the coins come from anyway?" "Aye! It could very well." Karl says, "So, be careful." Looking at Jochi, Karl says, "No curse here, I do not think. Poison I think, yes. Perhaps an accident, perhaps foul play." Karl looks at Iseul "What is this about a purse of coins?" Glancing around the body, Karl asks, "Where is it? It should be examined...carefully."

Seems like people are taking as good of care of Romeo as they can.
Therefore, Armand will do whatever he can to help otherwise, such as cautiously gathering up the coins and the purse. He'll lay them out on his sleeping mat so they can be examined individually.
And using the handle of his axe (or a dagger), he'll turn the pouch inside out (in case there was a hidden poisoned needle therein).

Karl's mouth and tongue goes numb from the poisoned blood and he has to stop when he becomes nauseous (1 damage and a fever). The procedure seems to have helped a little and Romeo's convulsions become less severe.
To prepare any anti-venom the exact nature of the poison must be determined.

Armand's investigation pays off, the purse contains a large, yellow-green, deathstalker scorpion, eight inches in length. Karl has never seen one this big and its size might account for the extreme reaction its sting has caused in Romeo. Its venom can cause the throat to swell shut or the heart to stop.
As far as Karl knows there is no anti-venom, but blowing air into the mouth and strongly massaging the chest of the victim has been known to help from time to time.

Looking at Jochi, Karl says, "No curse here, I do not think. Poison I think, yes. Perhaps an accident, perhaps foul play. "To be bit by a poisonous scorpion, I call this cursed bad luck," Jochi mutters. "Say what you will, someone here means us harm and I think we had best depart and find a place to nurse Romeo back to health."

Armand will kill the scorpion, if it isn't already dead.
And then he'll help with the resuscitation efforts, as needed, under Karl's direction.

Hearing the commotion in the adjacent tent, Nestor first shouts at the others to be quiet. He needs his rest. The shouts become more frantic however, and Nestor realizes that all is not well.
Grabbing his sword belt and backpack he rushes over to see Romeo lying on the floor with his hand slashed and bleeding, the newcomer Karl puking in a corner of the tent, and Armand smashing a pile of copper coins.
"How long have I been asleep?" he exclaims. "What treachery is this?"
He rushes over to Karl's side to see if he can be of assistance offering him a drink from his waterskin.

Karl accepts the waterskin. He takes a mouthful of water and spits it out, then another. "A lillel better." Karl says. His tongue is still thick and he feels lightheaded, but not quite as bad as before. "Looks like Romeo was bitten by a scorpion and I got the backlash from it trying to suck out the poison." Karl says, "We need to watch for his breathing to stop and listen to his chest. If his heart stops beating we can massage his chest and try to get it going again." "I don't know what else we can do." Karl sounds dejected, "I wonder how such a large scorpion got into his pouch?"

I wonder how such a large scorpion got into his pouch? Not the sharpest knife in the drawer under the best of circumstances, Jochi nevertheless finally puts it together. "I saw Romeo go alone into Nader's tent last night! It must be he who is responsible! Let us seize Nader and his men and hold them at knife-point until they agree to undo this curse."

Though Karl and Armand do their best, Romeo's pulse and breath grows fainter by the minute.
Jacques returns with the Sheik's private physician and he applies leeches to the arm and chest and a strong balm to the throat. As the leeches on the chest begin to die off, the old man shakes his head, "It is too late. The venom is too strong and spread too far. He is in God's hands now."
When no one is looking, Iseul jab's Romeo with the healing stick. At first nothing seems to happen, but then the mercenary coughs violently and gasps for breath.
OOC: Romeo has his HP restored and can be up and about the next day (or tonight, if he really insists), though he will feel quite weak.
The physician feels Romeo's pulse and declares the recovery a miracle. Romeo soon falls into a feverish sleep and the physician prescribes him plenty of rest and water to drink. Before he leaves, he asks Jacques for seven gold pieces as recompense for his leeches.
OOC: Do you want to pursue anything else during the night or return to your sleep?

Jacques gratefully hands the physician the 7gp and after the Bedouin leaves he thanks Karl and explains to his companions:
"Romeo sold one of his possessions to that snake Nader and this has been his reward. Nader no longer needs us, that's what this action says to me. We have told him how we entered the city and no doubt he will send his men to loot it's other treasures. Time is against us now. Our best revenge would be to ransack it's riches before he does. I must tell you that when we all went to the tent to sell him the trinkets he spoke in Arabic of a key and a gate, no doubt sorcery is involved. I have no desire to let that dog unlock any more secrets that will make him more powerful.....and a bigger danger to all of us."
He pauses. "I fear we cannot wait until Romeo is fully recovered. This night the Sheik has learnt of Sand Uruks increasing their raids over in the East. Who knows how long this camp will be safe for? I say again, time is against us. Let us ride out for the city tomorrow after buying horses and plenty water. What say you all mes amis ?"
OOC: Whatever the group decide, Jacques will also want to find out from Armand what happened with the Hungarian. Maybe the group can decide on an alibi, just in case ?

Once they're alone, Armand will relate what happened (fairly accurately) to Jacques about the Hungarians and their attack on him.
"Seems that where ever I go, I trip over them."

"I know nothing of Nader other than camp gossip." says Karl frowning, "But I fear your assessment of the man is a correct one. Confronting him now would only make him aware that we consider him an enemy, and passing this affair off as an accident might put him off his guard. " "Yes, I do think that if we are to move, we move quickly." Karl nods and muses, "We need to bring along that knight we spoke with earlier, and perhaps another one or two others as guards and animal minders."

"I don't think we should face Nader directly just yet. We do not know how much power he wields. It could be that he could turn us all into sand with merely a word. I have heard of magicians with the power to do so."
"I agree we should make haste to the city in the morning after obtaining some mounts and our mercenaries. If we happen upon any of Nader's followers while we are there...they will meet with unfortunate accidents."

After making various warding signs against the evil eye - and also shaking out his bedding for scorpions, just in case - Jochi is done for the night.
Come morning, he'll help evaluate the available horses and make recommendations to those seeking steeds.

The next day dawns. Those without horses go to bargain with the merchants, while the rest begin to pack.
OOC: Will you be taking the tents with you? If you leave them, your serving boy, Aqil, will look after them.
Karl can haggle for the horses. If he succeeds with the saving throw the horses cost only 40 gp each. They are all in good shape and have 1d8+9 HP.
Karl also finds the ingredients for the cough syrup. The merchant demands a preposterous price of 11 gold. Karl can try to haggle according to the rules.
You soon find out that both Hamza ibn Nader and the Hungarians have left the oasis during the night. There are also rumors going around that there was bloodshed in the ajami camp during the evening and that the Hungarians were somehow involved.
OOC: So, where are you headed?

I think we are heading back to the tower that the group began exploring on the first trip...no? OOC: Not much left to explore there. The only part we didn't explore was the wooden balcony inside the temple because it was too dangerous. Also as Hamza ibn Nader has left the oasis it's possible that he is there already.
I say we head for the obsidian tower and if we find something else interesting on the way we can explore that first.

The Hungarians are probably lying in wait for us, so I think we need to be careful on the way and be looking for a defensible location for our animals...and ourselves, as we might not be coming back to the oasis for a few days.
